  1. we are at the point of renewing our servers and i want to see if its worth investing in them for the next 5 /6 years ! sorry i should have said , i created the post for the poll to see what others are currently doing
  2. out of interest i have created a poll http://www.edugeek.net/forums/general-chat/228445-poll-service-cloud.html
  3. just want to see how many schools have moved to the cloud for services/infrastructure ,plz forgive the typos this post is for the Poll !
  4. some good replies here , though as a secondary school we have a lot of stored data about 1tb of resources including videos for general use for staff and students also staff have 15gb of storage that most use Our internet speed would have to be dam good and reliable, at the moment we quite often bottom it I have to worry as well how we would deal with restoring deleted files, not forgetting log on times that are awful at the moment even with a 10Gb backbone I sort of think if we have to have DCHP,file,EXAM software and SIMS servers what's the point on relying on the cloud for how much a virtual AD, print svr etc. machine takes up we allready have 365 , one drive, cloud backup , IIS as well as direct access i sort of think give it 5 more years and all our devices can be thin client , with all our resources in the cloud Though I like the idea of making it someone else’s problem , as that’s all it really achieves as we know the cloud is only someone else’s computer!
  5. Hi, is there anyway to create a TXT log file so as I can see when users are logging on and off HA+ ? (without having to filter out the information from iis logs) thanks Stef
  6. thanks for the replies any more would be really appreciated ! does anyone one know the cost as well ?
  7. as the subject says we will be looking at 'RM Integris ' and would really like some opinions on the system ? googling 'RM Integris' brings up a lot of primary/ junior schools ! at the moment we host our own sims and though can have its issues it is reasonably OK and what people are used to! we only have our internet services that are out sourced everything else is done in house we are a secondary school with aprox 800 students your input greatly appreciated thanks Stef
  8. can you guys give me some pros and cons for thin / fat client please I though of another negative , we use index.dat to trace individual users activates when asked to, guessing this wouldn't work with thin client also in the event of a server failure users can store their work on their local desktop and again not sure this would work on thin client
  9. from what I'm reading unless your just browsing the net and maybe a little word processing thin client is a no no would be no good for ICT where we use programs such as Audacity, Serif, Movie maker etc no good for Art where we use Photoshop no good for CDT where we use autocad and no god for Music where we use Sibelius I'm not sure how well Sims would work never mind discover so no good for Admin think we could maybe have them in the library ! correct me if I'm wrong ? not only that but am I correct in believing that if someone infects the image say by browsing a inappropriate web site , so as you end up with a few inappropriate toolbars installed every client that logs on will be as the infected one ! and as our little darlings are always trying to break our systems that would mean one kid could bring down every terminal and then all clients would have to be off whilst the image was restored
  10. Not just ours! just try typing a username and password https://portal.st-augustines.worcs.sch.uk/HAP/login.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2fHAP%2finsight https://www.aldercarhighschool.co.uk/extranet/login.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2fextranet%2f https://www.maestegcs.bridgend.sch.uk/HAP/login.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2fhap%2f https://remote.glebelands.surrey.sch.uk/HAP/login.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2fhap%2f https://www.wgs.derbyshire.sch.uk/HAP/login.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2fHAP%2f https://resources.flegg.norfolk.sch.uk/hap/login.aspx https://hap.carrhill.lancs.sch.uk/hap/login.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2fhap https://hap.springmead.herts.sch.uk/hap/login.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2fhap anyone got a clue why it's doing this
  11. Thanks for the replies guys no definitive answer yet then, as I thought! it was easy 5 , 10 years ago but now
  12. I'll second that ours does the same
  13. I personally don't think technology is there (good enough) yet for wireless terminals that I believe would be the ideal. I think we are just at the tipping point where technology is getting good enough but do you risk it , maybe another 5 or 10 years , don't know what do you think ? So if you did have enough money to replace everything what would you use now, what are the pros and cons, what’s the consensus ? Terminals Pros Easier to manage Cheaper to run / electric Less heat output Longer lasting/lifespan Computer Pros Faster All eggs not in one basket ___________________________ wired More stable Faster wireless More freedom of movement Cheaper stef.
  14. Hi, I am currently looking for a Network Managers job in the Nottinghamshire / Derbyshire area as mine and my technicians roles are about to be outsourced, I have worked as a school Network manager for over 8 years and in IT for over 20 years. I have extensive experience of managing systems, web design and programing and lots, lots more far to much to mention I would be happy to work part time during term time only as long as it was 25 hours ! sadly the more I look around the more I see our jobs being outsourced Any help anyone could give would be appreciated please PM me thx Stef
  15. for some reason if I enter a username that's not in the AD I get Server Error in '/extranet' Application. Index was out of range. Must be non-negative and less than the size of the collection any help appreciated stef
  16. Hi, for some reason students don't have write access to their folder , they can read ok but no options appear other than open if I log on as administrator I have full access to create files etc. however as a student I set enable write to 'all' and tried %username% but no joy any help appreciated thanks stef
  17. thanks that clears it up for me, yes I was thinking of VDi is it really worth going down that road I have to wonder as our machines though old already run windows 7 so I guess should run 10 ok ? i'll look in to mdt
  18. what I'm asking is it possible to boot say 30 machines via the network to a windows 7 or 8 image that is set up with hyper v I see so I would have to have 30 virtual machines on hyper v that can be accessed via a RDP server, this correct ?
  19. I'm new to hyper V can someone tell me is it possible to network boot to a PC to hyper v server (guessing its got to be!) if so how many machines would I be able connect to a windows 8 image on one good server running hyper V thanks Stef
  20. Hi, I know this may be unique per school , but does anyone have a 5 year strategic plan I can have a look at thanks ? Stef
  21. thanks for the replies guys I think as long as our servers are in our office we will keep the num lock as long as we can, once we get them moved (one day maybe) a maglock , buzzer system sounds good we have a in out notice on the door , only problem is the kids keep changing it on the point of theft from the office we have had several staff steel from our office in the past !
  22. Hi everyone, Our office has a Key code lock , This is no different to our main reception, also our office is of a corridor where students walk, in the past we had an issue of students and staff walking in when we were not in the office and as there are tools including Stanley knifes etc. accessible it was deemed safer to have the door locked Now this has never been an issue before, however now a member of staff has had a strop that “we are locking our self’s in our office” !, though we give the key code to staff if they request it and some use it , others just knock and wait for us to answer What do you do ? the only positive to this is that the last time audit came in they told us the door should be locked at all times , as our servers are directly behind the door - though some could argue that when we are in we should disable the lock, which we could though it would be a pain as we are in an out all the time
  23. Just had to post after skimming through, well we have actually got CCTV of a white figure (blurred arms, legs head etc,,) in our corridors at night (about 3 seconds), this is god's honest truth and not just a blob in the distance- we (myself and my techy) used to show it to the students however some of them got a little bit upset by it so we decided that it was probably best not to discuss or show it any further,we came across it purely by accident when looking for some CCTV footage now I don't really believe in ghosts Norton has the only ghost I got close to and have always put the video down to a trick of the light or reflection on the lens, that I'm sure it must be I would post it the pic though no doubt I'd get in trouble for doing that One thing we have considered is having a pentagon devils trap painted on the floor just through our office door under the carpet, but this would be for a few members of staff we are not sure about
  24. yes I agree , only we have plans in motion to lay of staff for the next 3 years due to a predicated drop in pupil numbers for the next 5 years so no chance of getting any more money. I used to have two technicians now only one ! stef
  25. lol you think your budget's tight last year we had 5k for replacing computers, 8k for maintenance out of this we have to buy toners for all departments - we have approx. 650 ageing machines 40 plus interactive boards, over 60 laser printers aprox 40 of them being color, 5 servers, over 3 sites - it's the projectors that break the bank they seem to leave them on 24/7 it wasn’t always like this my budget's gone down from approx. 50k to this over 5 years as for emergencies/unplanned for events we just hope we don’t have any stef
