Small Basic on a RM CC4 network

Hi

 

I've been asked by our computer science teacher to install small basic on our CC4 network. I'm a little concerned about this because of security issues it poses - students needing to run exe files? I've never used/installed small basic so am a little unsure on what permissions need to be given to enable to use it.

 

Could anyone offer advice? Do you use it in your school and has it caused any problems?

This is what we did.

 

Quite a few solutions to it. Virtual box seems to work the best, also has the option to delete the image every time they log in and out, so no matter how much they try it break it, it'll fix itself.

 

Saving work was where it got awkward. We had the pupils home drive mapped into the VM, it did worry me a bit as it meant they could try and circumvent certain things, but luckily this never happened.

 

Best thing is to keep try breaking it in the ways the kids will and you'll know what settings you need to implement and what not to make it work, then monitor its usage and what the kids do for a few weeks too.

Hi both and thanks for the advice. We've never gone down the virtual route before so excuse the questions. Does the Virtual Box install on our CC4 network, or a separate machine?

When I worked for a CC4 school, we created a virtual machine and packaged it as normal and deployed it to the IT classes it was needed in.

 

To be honest, seeing as it's now compulsory, there should be some RM tech articles related to this matter.

There is a CC4 package blueprint for VirtualBox. It is not free but I think it only cost about £50.
