Old Server to New

Hello, i have recently taken over a support firm at a local primary school. When they left they deleted the dc and when i remove the workstations from their old domain it then takes off the software that they installed over gpo, that part is fine. When I have set up the new dc and added the machines to the new domain they dont seam to be applying all of the computer settings on start up. In face it keeps trying to uninstall the same piece of software and doesnt try to install the new software that i have pushed out.

 

Any ideas or am i looking at a system rebuild of the workstations?

I'd consider deleting/renaming the GroupPolicy folder that's stored locally on a test machine or two, force a gpupdate and then see what happens. If that still doesn't work then a full rebuild is probably going to be quicker than troubleshooting the problem unless you've got a lot of machines to work through.

 

Also seems like a bit of a dick move to delete the dc when you stop supporting a school, you'd assume they'd at least let you migrate accounts and stuff out of it.

Yes but the school were paying for them to do that in the first place and were not asking for them to cripple the system if their contract ran out. FFS I could go around and uninstall all the client OS's and everything I have ever done at all my schools over the last 10 years. If it was me I would take that up with the company.

I'd start afresh, who knows what else has been deleted / disabled. Start new, build a new domain and migrate everyone over.

the system was set up using hyper v, when they left they deleted the virtual dc server yes (where group policy lived)

Yes, it's in System32 and is usually a hidden folder.

The outgoing support company need taking to task for crippling the network in this way. It's professional misconduct in my opinion and that the very least, spiteful to cripple a school network in that way.

So the dc was deleted before the devices could be cleanly removed from the domain? are you simply trying to change them from that old domain to the new? or are you putting them all into a workgroup first? Cleanly removing a device from the domain should remove all old policies, so maybe it now needs the step of adding to a workgroup first?

Yeah put into work group first then added to new domain

Backup the registry of 1 machine and try removing the following key

 

Delete the HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft

Deleting that key would clear out any old Computer GPO's that might still be hanging around from when the DC was still in place.
