Single Sign On options

Hi all,

We’re a college looking at single sign on options for various on-campus application such as our virtual learning environment (Moodle). At present we have unique logins to each service and there is increasing demand for a single login to all resources we provision. I was just wondering what SSO tech/options people would recommend or have had success with? We use Active Directory (2012r2) as our on premise authentication server and synchronise with Office365 with DirSync to provision email, web storage, for students and staff.

 

Any input or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Moodle has native LDAP integration Worth checking if any other services do as well.

Yes already looked at this, but have also noticed third party SSO application portals that facilitate access to various services you may have provisioned, e.g. YouID by Impero Software.

ADFS? I believe you can make moodle SAML aware, and also works with O365. Internal logins would be seamless.

 

With the 2012r2 web application proxy it should be able to provide authentication to most things externally I would have thought

ADFS is an option but we'd like something with the least amount of administrative burden and/or complexity, hence we are using DirSync over fed services. Are there any articles or install guides for Moodle and ADFS?

You can also use the free version of Centrify's hosted service to get SSO functionality with very little effort...

We're using it for our Office 365 authentication as an alternative to setting up ADFS

Also could you not point noodle directly at AD?

 

Finally I couldn't imaging doing anything that didn't involve Salamander at some point.

Expanding into this; we'd like to use such a portal online. Looking at YouID currently. Most of everything inside school is either single or same sign on, however we're thinking more along the lines of stuff at home - remote access (HAP), office 365, moodle - and specifically non-AD users such as parents and the various apps they can use from home such as Show My Homework and Moodle.

Any suggestions or examples of this?

We're using RM Unify, mostly because we got a free trial. Best one I've seen is Airhead - it had AD sync, but also allows you to capture other passwords (sort of like lastpass) but then works as an SSO linked to your AD account. You can set up all kinds of services so that it acts like a launcher for almost everything you use

Did @DO1 or @synaesthesia make a purchasing decision on this? Or any other good or bad experiences? Needs to be more than ADFS - I'd like to be able to add "personal apps" for those which aren't properly federated.

No, nothing here. We don't really have any budget to do things like this but still interested in the idea.
