Labeling?

Hi guys,

 

In need of a label worker for marking up quite a few computers and iPads soon, so I was wondering how you label them up, what you use and the costs?

Just been using bog standard printed labels here but I wouldn't recommend it. I had a look for a nice (cheapish) label embosser but have only seen the the old school tape style ones (search for dymo embosser). Might pick one of them up soon as they are a little more durable than paper labels. Really wanted something that looked a bit nicer though.

 

Depending on what you need to put on the label you could get some nice plastic/metal asset tags printed with sequential ID numbers on them (lots of places online and probably local to you will do this) but depends on what you need.

 

You can get label printers that will print on plastic labels but I haven't seen one for cheaper then around £250 and I can't justify that for here.

we use a brother p-touch label printer for laptops and ipads, and for larger labels we use a dymo label printer. For asset labels we use the ones provided by our asset system.

Does anyone use barcode labels and then use a Barcode scanner to record info?

 

If so what Barcode scanners are recommended?

we used to use barcodes along with WASP asset tracking, but our new system used QR codes (schoolassetmanager.co.uk)

The only thing i use barcodes for now is scanning in new toner inventory.

Barcodes could be a good idea for auditing too, I was thinking more identity for the mean time.

 

Tempted to buy a Brother label maker, £11 and £4 refills, worth a punt.

 

I did think about printer labels too but having used them in the past, they wear away pretty quick.

We use these... TamperGuard® Destructible Vinyl Labels | Seton UK They're excellent and a pretty good price, just be prepared for the constant marketing contact after you've bought them. For security marking rather than asset marking we use SmartWater Business

I use a Brother QL-570 thermal label printer and a Phoenix II barcode scanner.

Works pretty well - the labels are very sticky and take some picking to get off once they've had a few hours to settle but they're not what I would consider permanent.

Do they not wear down easy?

Not so far. I use the shiny white film label roll, DK-22211. Because its thermal, the 'ink' is inside the label (under the shiny outer layer) and is activated by heat from the printhead, so there's nothing to rub off unless the whole label is picked off by little fingers!

Hasn't happened yet though...
