elsiegee40 Posted March 27, 2015 Author Posted March 27, 2015 @garethedmondson fancy a move from the valleys?!
garethEds Posted March 28, 2015 Posted March 28, 2015 @garethedmondson fancy a move from the valleys?! I've actually just spoke to Mrs E about this. It is so tempting for a year or two. GJE

mb2k01 Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 Geography isn't my strong point, but having never heard of it before, I'd love to be able to put on my best Bond villain accent and tell people I worked at "Ascension Island"!
E_G_R2 Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 If only I had skills from the 'Dark Side' would love something like this.
elsiegee40 Posted March 30, 2015 Author Posted March 30, 2015 If only I had skills from the 'Dark Side' would love something like this. Me too!
fiza Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 I know we shouldn't post on job adverts but I just wanted to say I have worked on Ascension Island and it is very idyllic but very remote. Its a refuelling stop for the Falklands. You've got Americans and British Forces personnel on the Island. The majority of workers come from St Helena afaik.
sonofsanta Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 Just had a serious conversation with the wife about this over breakfast - for two years, it is very tempting. Schools offer GCSE and daughter is only about to start hers, two boys aren't yet school age so minimal disruption for them. Hmmm...

All depends if you and the wife can be away from friends and family for 2 whole years. You only get 1 paid for trip back half way through your posting. It is one of those "once in a lifetime" things to do. What To See | Ascension Island English Bay is amazing.
elsiegee40 Posted March 31, 2015 Author Posted March 31, 2015 I know we shouldn't post on job adverts.... I have no intention of moderating discussion on this thread. Those considering it may need to discuss and pick your brain

Wouldn't get another chance like this, that's for sure, so I'm well up for it. I did a year's work in Switzerland before and it was fantastic - getting to really live somewhere for that length of time is an absolute privilege. The only problem is I'm not a qualified teacher but I can but try, dependent upon the opinion of our teenager daughter. The bigger problem would be living away from easy Amazon deliveries for two years...

The bigger problem would be living away from easy Amazon deliveries for two years... There are/were weekly flights from RAF Brize Norton which can bring packages across as they deliver to BFPO addresses. I was a Civil Servant working for the MOD so my case was slightly different, I didn't work for the Ascension Island Govt.

fiza Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 (edited) Reckon I'm dusting my CV off then: If your other half wants a job there is a Teaching Assistant job going aswell Working Here | Ascension Island Lots of good info on there - including costs of flights. Edited March 31, 2015 by fiza 1
sonofsanta Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 If your other half wants a job there is a Teaching Assistant job going aswell Working Here | Ascension Island Lots of good info on there - including costs of flights. You mean if my wife, who is a teaching assistant, wants a job as a teaching assistant? Yes please!
fiza Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 You mean if my wife, who is a teaching assistant, wants a job as a teaching assistant? Yes please! Surely this is a sign from . Dust the cobwebs off that CV! 1
sonofsanta Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 Well I reckon I'll have plenty of competition; their site is broken with HTTP 509, Bandwidth Exceeded
E_G_R2 Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 Sonofsanta good luck with the application, let us know how you get on!
HarryMonkey Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 What an opportunity, a friend of mine worked for the BBC out there many years ago and paints a wonderful picture of the place. Good luck @sonofsanta.
fiza Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 @sonofsanta - closing date was 17th April. Did you apply?
sonofsanta Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 I did, and my missus applied for the TA job (which had actually closed before the IT job went up, they just hadn't taken the advert down), and if I've not heard in 4 days then no such luck. I still live in hope, though EDIT: how rude of me to forget: thanks for all the good wishes! 1
sonofsanta Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 Well, interviews are this week and I should have heard by now in order to complete a written task ahead of said Skype interview... so no luck I'm actually really disappointed, even though it's always been enormously unlikely. It would have been so much fun. Best get on with the original plan of "best selling fantasy author" instead, then...
E_G_R2 Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 It did look to me that they wanted/needed a qualified teacher with tech skills rather than the other way around. You can always apply again in 2 years time 1
elsiegee40 Posted April 28, 2015 Author Posted April 28, 2015 Hard luck sonofsanta. It's hard not to plan yourself into any role you apply for and this one was special. 1
