mrbios Posted December 12, 2007 Posted December 12, 2007 only get this with students but on occasion a kid wont be able to logon with the error "could not load your roaming profile" with a directry going to a temporary internet file (something along those lines) the only way to fix it is to logon as an admin and delete all the locally stored profiles (or just the specific one of the person trying to logon anyway) is there a fix for this? or a way to make the profiles remove themselves without having to install something on all the machines cheers
PEO Posted December 12, 2007 Posted December 12, 2007 Here is a script that runs on machine startup that clears the profiles. I would like to take credit for it but cant this is one of Bossman's scriptsprofiles_cleanup_script.vbsexclude.txt
SYNACK Posted December 12, 2007 Posted December 12, 2007 You can delete these via a startup script, there is also an option in group policy that supposedly does this but I have had limited success with it. There is a thread about the scripted variety here http://www.edugeek.net/index.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=54142
mrbios Posted December 12, 2007 Author Posted December 12, 2007 cheers ill give that a go MrHappy ill have a read of that link too, cheers SYNACK
K.C.Leblanc Posted December 12, 2007 Posted December 12, 2007 There's also a Microsoft tool for removing profiles called DelProf. I'm working a my own script, but it's not ready yet.
mrbios Posted December 12, 2007 Author Posted December 12, 2007 that script appears to have worked a treat, thank you very much MrHappy, only downside though is the fact we dont often reboot the machines in one block, there left on almost 24/7 but at least we can jsut tell the teacher to restart the kids machine from now on rather than having to remote into the particular machine and clear the cache of profiles
PEO Posted December 12, 2007 Posted December 12, 2007 you could always set the computers to shutdown/restart at daft o'clock then the profiles are cleared for next day. Glad it worked for you may i ask why the computers are left on almost 24/7? seems a like waste of energy/money :|
mrbios Posted December 14, 2007 Author Posted December 14, 2007 you could always set the computers to shutdown/restart at daft o'clock then the profiles are cleared for next day. Glad it worked for you may i ask why the computers are left on almost 24/7? seems a like waste of energy/money :| its because of the way ours rooms are setup, we dont have pcs in cases, the motherboards/powersupply/harddrive are all mounted onto an wooden board which are in small cupboards with locks (one cupboard per 2 pcs split in the middle) ill take a picture and show you an example soon In our older 2 IT rooms we have a Switch to turn all the PCs off in one go, but the only way to do that with the 3 new ones in the new building would be to flick the trip switches (which isnt advised at all!) perhaps ill have a chat with some people and talk about getting the same thing setup in our new building as we have with the old IT rooms good thing is we dont have to worry about heat as when the rooms get too hot the windows open automaticly along with the roof windows little problem with this script, we've had a few teachers plug there laptops in and its deleted there local profiles (we let teachers have local admin to there laptops for home, bad idea probably but its beyond our control now) anything id add into the exceptions list to stop it remove anything created on the local machine rather than removing everything?
strawberry Posted December 14, 2007 Posted December 14, 2007 mr bios, you can set the pc's so that it only shows the shut down box not the log off box. The existing scirpt you can set in gpo as a system startup file, then set it to the ou the machines in that room are in.
PEO Posted December 14, 2007 Posted December 14, 2007 Hi, I guess you would have to add there account names the the exceptions list. I dont have that problem here, because every laptop i hand out to staff get a generic teacher account. Would love to see picture of pcs on boards.
mrbios Posted December 14, 2007 Author Posted December 14, 2007 ah of course, thank strawberry i was being an idiot with where i put it we have them set to log off only with shut down removed, otherwise we get loads of kids shutting down after the first lesson and we spend the day running around turning them back on again
mrbios Posted December 14, 2007 Author Posted December 14, 2007 this is the best example of one of the boards ive got for now: http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/5409/boardsxj5.jpg thats just mounted on the wall in our office as a test machine, in a classroom though there sat inside a small cuboard with a door and lock which sits between the desk and the floor and is split down the middle to have a pc on either side
mrbios Posted December 14, 2007 Author Posted December 14, 2007 haha, keep an eye out after 3:15 ill get a picture of the classroom style setup, you'll have to excuse the mess though as we did have them clipped flat onto the center parting in the cupboards but it failed dismally
mrbios Posted December 14, 2007 Author Posted December 14, 2007 right here you go, this is how our IT rooms are layed out in the new building, i forgot to take the key with me though so you'll have to just imagin that picture of the board inside this cupboard the room: http://img514.imageshack.us/img514/1892/pic0006ue3.jpg http://img510.imageshack.us/img510/9440/pic0008ek4.jpg the cupboard: http://img49.imageshack.us/img49/4684/pic0007cc3.jpg works quite well, but i had a chat to my manager about sorting some switches out to turn all the machines off in them, going to try and swindle it to come out the main school budget seeing as it saves on there electric bill rather than coming out of our budget
K.C.Leblanc Posted December 14, 2007 Posted December 14, 2007 we spend the day running around turning them back on again Use wake on lan. I use wol.exe in a batch file, I used to angry IP scanner to gather a list of all the PCs mac addresses. You could set the script up on a server and use sheduled tasks to run it at lesson changes.

Michael Posted December 14, 2007 Posted December 14, 2007 @mrbios - That's the craziest setup I have seen in a long time. Did someone forget to budget for computer cases? You can buy even a cheap one for £15. And I have to agree with previous comments. Excluding servers, leaving workstations on 24/7 really is a waste of electricity. Out of curiosity, if a computer ever does get switched off, how do you turn the PC back on? If it doesn't support WoL your only option is to short the two motherboard pins with a screw driver? Unless you have a small switch inside? At the schools I support, workstations are scheduled to shutdown at 6pm every evening. I don't worry about switching them back on in the morning, as teachers/pupils can do so when they're required.
mrbios Posted December 14, 2007 Author Posted December 14, 2007 we've made our own switches, in the 2 older rooms there all wired back to a box with all the power swithes in (like a money box with a lock and the back cut out then attached to the wall) and in the new building as seen in the picture they just have switches inside the box this wasnt my idea by the way, personally i both hate and like this way of doing it but we've always had a problem of kids pulling off drive bay covers, breaking power switches/reset switches, turning pcs on and off constantly, pulling cables out the back and so on when we have rooms with PCs in - fixes all those issues, only thing the kids can break like this are the keyboards/mice/monitors each of which is very easy to spot, so it does make life much easier all the teacher machines are still in cases, this is an IT classroom only thing, ill look into setting up WOL, never bothered to use it before, not sure why actually as its a damn good idea especially for how our pcs are setup EDIT: oh and the other thing it solves is kids who turn other kids pcs off while there working, this way they cant, which is especially good as our backups dont work properly at the moment
K.C.Leblanc Posted December 14, 2007 Posted December 14, 2007 we've made our own switches, For a moment I though you ment network switches. :? I like your set up, students (sometimes even staff) messing with PCs really bugged me where I used to work. Luckily it's a little more orderly where I am now (Girls Grammer School). If I get time on Monday I'll document how I implemented shutdown and wake up scripts here.
K.C.Leblanc Posted December 19, 2007 Posted December 19, 2007 This is my notes for the wake up script I use. I hope it makes sense.wake_on_lan_script.doc
mrbios Posted December 20, 2007 Author Posted December 20, 2007 thanks KC leblanc, ill look into implementing that
