How does your printing work?

Hi

 

At the minute we have got printing working through scripts in group policy where wherever you log in you should get the printer for that room, but recently students are picking up these printers and they are staying in their roaming profiles, so when they log on somewhere else they still have other rooms printers avaliable to them. Or sometimes the policy just doesn't kick in and they don't pick up the current rooms printer at all. Has anyone got a failsafe solution they currently implement and if so how does it work please? Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated

Cant you put the first line of the script to delete all printers and then recreate them?

We use 'Pull Printing' printed documents go of to a virtual que, you can then log into any printer around school to print of your document.

 

Can you apply the printers at machine level rather than under a user policy?

We deploy printers with Group Policy Preferences, the first action processed on login is to delete all the printers, then map the correct one (based on item level targeting).

Group Policy Preferences here as well.

 

Policies are defined in area and then loopback processing set so the user logging in in that area gets the correct default printer i.e MFD at the floor level which all rooms on that floor pick up and then the room printer set at the room OU as default printer. We have just set ours to Replace, but we do not use Roaming profiles here.

 

We are also moving to follow me printing at the moment.

With the joy of moving to a Follow Me (You? Them?) queue from Summer. So one queue for all.... Except the heads, who just had to have printers, couldn't live without them.

Group policy preferences is something i've not tried yet and sounds a good idea. At the risk of sounding a bit daft, how have you done this? created ini files?

Got this figured out now using GPP and in testing mode, hopefully will solve a very random irritating problem. Thanks for the help

We have a mix of pull queues and printers deployed via GPP. All working well with a few exceptions. Some printers, deployed via GPP, are deployed for some users at some stations when they shouldn't: Room 17's printer appears when a student logs in at a station in Room 41: That sort of thing.

 

Still trying to figure out what is going wrong but for the most part it works well.
