I'm not a network manager, I'm a senior tech, but i do the network managers job for less pay (Not bitter at all as you can tell)

Depends on the time of year but lately leading up to april this is most of my day:

Arrive at 8

Check backups, VMs, SCCM monitoring if i've had deployments or updates the previous night for first part of the day

Sort through emails people send me at night or first thing

bit of budget planning

The odd phonecall to a supplier or prospective supplier about the coming budget and looking for quotes, product ideas (Generally talking SANs here)

Check edugeek :p

Changing things on the TV system

Sort people who come to the door to give me tasks

The occasional meeting/conversation over coming financial year plans

Other than that it's just the usual daily things you get in IT. Occasionally i'll spot something on a forum that'll make me think "ooo that's good, i might look at implementing that" such as direct access which i only recently put in place.

Arrive in the office, sit down and do nothing.

This is probably what the world thinks of us - the reality of course is quite different!

Yeah you sit down and then delegate! haha

Wow, I thought I did too much of the our of hours stuff but logging in first thing in a morning.. Can't you set up email alerts to tell you if there is something wrong which should free up some time in a morning

Could do But would rather check myself.

Usual day for me is....

amble in at 8, chat with staff for half an hour.

amble into the office and glance at status screen to see if any faults have been logged

check e-mails, check websites, check kettle

potter around until lunch

check kettle

potter around until 4.

A busy day will involve actually having a support call raised that needs to be dealt with
