blu4 Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 Give it a go- Spritz I can do 600wps easy :> but I don't brag about it on forums!
BJG Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 (edited) ...ay, an interesting technology. Definitely has potential, with the right material, presented in the right way. (Personally, mostly I tend to look at the pictures.) Edited March 17, 2015 by BJG
unixman_again Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 Back in the 1970s, I did a speed reading course (Evelyn Wood's Reading Dynamics), which was a popular thing to do back in the day. I can't remember what speed I got up to, but now I read very slowly. I'm guessing 150wpm.
Garacesh Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 I could do 700 without issue*, but reading in one-word-at-a-time flashes seems very inefficient. If I'd have been distracted for even a moment I would have lost half a sentence. * Though I doubt I actually read at that speed when I'm presented with a full body of text.
featured_spectre Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 I could read the 700WPM without issue, if anything it could be faster.
spadam Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 I struggled once I got to 500wpm and found that I wasn't taking in all the details. Could be very useful for skim reading though and then go back and read in depth the important parts.
Joanne Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 (edited) Omg... but what it does to your eyes afterwards.... it's like when you played guitar hero and when you moved your eyes away from the screen everything would wobble... But yeah I got to the max. Also... is that a HTC One M7???? Edited March 17, 2015 by Joanne
Pottsey Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 Yes it’s fast but I find the information harder to comprehend and I don’t like the way you cannot go back and re read something interesting or double check what you read.
jinnantonnixx Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 I was fine at 700 wpm, but I wouldn't want to read a technical manual like that!
blu4 Posted March 17, 2015 Author Posted March 17, 2015 I think the idea of this is to absorb information quicker without reading everything- as you said, a manual has to be read properly but a quick news article is fine in my opinion.
JB7 Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 I've just read this: switching unions ? is it simple ? As Switching Unicorns ? is it simple ? So maybe this isn't for me
burnsyb0y Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 400 WPM for me. Dont feel bad about it as other than the web I have never read anything significant... No eye trainin'
Ketlane Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 The speed reading course I did some time ago emphasised reading groups of words - three, four or five - at a go, which encourages reading the words in context. It mirrored the observations of fast readers, whose eyes hop along a line of text in blocks of words rather than one at a time. We were pushed hard to read a novel at speed and many were approaching 1000wpm; there was more improvement among the slow readers, some of whom tripled their reading speed (with comprehension tested) in two days' training. I had a go with Spritz just now and was OK up to about 600wpm, but found that comprehension was fading - and long, polysyllabic words are presented at the same rate as short, easy words, so not sure it's the way forward. One of the presenters on our course suggested that if you could establish the width that could be read in one glance, then retyping the text in a column just that wide would enable the eye to read straight down, rather than scanning left-to-right and then down; I seem to remember him saying that President Kennedy had a staff that did the retyping for him.
Norphy Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 It's interesting but I don't think I'd want to read too much like this. I'm still getting a persistent black box in my vision a couple of minutes later. It also means that you can't blink otherwise you miss words! I'll stick with my Kindle, thanks.
TechMonkey Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 I found that I wasn't reading at above 550 but I got what they were saying, all teh way up to 700. But it needed a lot of concentration and as someone else said, if it was a manual or something I had comprehend I would find it very hard. The after effect on teh eyes is horrible though.
