Where is ICT going in education?

Hi All

 

I went to an interview recently and was asked the question "Where is ICT going in education?"

So i replied with the usual: -

 

Mobile devices to maximise engagement

Utilising cloud for services and storage e.g. Google Docs, Office 365

24/7 access

Virtualised networks

 

Apart from this, i was gazumped. any ideas?

Perhaps even a greater move to coding - that certainly seems to engage many. The return to computer science is upon us, but given the poor uptake I've seen on the networking side of things here I'm not sure many kids are looking at a future in ICT.

Far greater use of online resources in the classroom - teaching tools, assessment programs etc

Greater synchronisation between home and school work - accessing the same environment (feeds into cloud services and products like HAP+)

BYOD and ready access to materials for students from their own devices

Sharing of practice and potentially staff via resource pools

Web conferencing to industry partners, foreign classrooms etc

Ever more video evidence of coursework, classroom good practice, assessments

Environments for programming, exchanging code and working with others to create software / hardware solutions (just look at the Micro Bit)

Rumour has it that Finland will abandon the teaching of handwriting

Lesson recording for all sorts of purposes

All these are old news apart from the cloud thing I have been doing the others for 6 years or so. Cloud stuff is about 18 months, only limited by the internet connection.

I wouldnt say it's 'going' any of these. It's already there and has been for a while. I dont see it changing much for a while either, tbh.

Where is education going in general? is the whole delivery method of teaching standing in front of 30 kids really the best way to teach these days, 24/7 access to the information, follow the sun tutors available online, true anytime/anywhere learning.

 

Brick buildings and staff only being used for part of the day cost a lot of money.

I would say that it is getting ever more integrated across all subjects and areas. ICT is not just a subject and a couple of suites it is in all classes underpinning all subjects. This will continue and the need for reliablilty, technology and solutions will expand to cover the areas above (cloud computing, 24/7 access etc). As people above have said its evolution rather than revolution.

 

It is about finding ever smarter and innovative ways of using existing and developing technology to its maximum in the face of shrinking budgets.

 

As a side note when I was in school it was all about getting kids off screens (TV, Computers, game consoles) now it seems to be about putting them in front on one!!

To be honest this is a question where the answer is based on what type of Staff are responsible for IT and the School.

If it's a School that pushes for IT regardless of the Pro's and Con's you may find that your list is pretty much covers nearly everything.

 

One thing IT should be about is cutting down costs, ease of access and back to basics for Teachers.

 

Online text books/research materials - I personally see Schools going more and more down the route of Universities that are setup to have almost everything online based. Where Students are not only able to access their homework but also able to access their day to day classwork. Teachers will have their lesson plans online and accessed by other Staff (for cover etc but also for Leaders/Ofsted/Governors).

 

I see IT systems becoming more reliable but only experienced and/or qualified leadership (this isn't negative towards anyone personally).

 

IT should be about what Staff want to use it for on a daily basis and not just what's available.

 

Some of the above might be some time away though.
