Mr_Jiminy Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 I have a school wanting to explore options for recording and observing lessons, to help improve lesson delivery. In the past the school has always used Iris Connect, however I'm keen to find out what others have in place. Thanks in advance
unixman_again Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 We only record one lesson (General Studies), and we use a method which is so cruddy it doesn't rate a mention. One of the secretaries sits in there with a video camera. These people helixmedialibrary have lesson capture which is used by several universities and when I saw the demo, looked very easy. Click the big start button, deliver lecture, click the big stop button and it's uploaded to the media server. This only captures the teachers screen and mike, but using some extra hardware and a camera, you could capture the whole lecture. If you look at the video testimonials, you'll see the sort of thing you can do; these were recorded at one of the annual user symposiums.

I'm not thrilled with it, it's bandwidth hungry - both internally on the network and externally to it's cloud storage, expensive and a bit fiddly, but it seems to cover all bases, and given that this is pretty much a box ticking excercise, covering bases is what it's about.

We don't record lessons, but we're quite impressed with our Ubiquiti IP CCTV cameras - they will record sound and full HD video, the server-side software to run them is free, you can attach whatever wide-angle lenses you like to front of them and they only cost around £120 per camera. 3
Fazza Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 We have a portable ClassWatch system that is so simple that even a Teacher can use it! All they have to do is plug everything in to the laptop and then turn the laptop on. It automatically starts recording so all they have to do is make a note of when they're lesson started and then they can review it. After 48hrs all recordings are automatically deleted as the system is purely for the Teacher to record themselves and then watch the video themselves. 1

Novalee Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 (edited) We use Star Lesson. A big portable camera (and stand if required) is provided. Each teacher has what is called a 'Dibba' card which they scan to begin recording. Then they can watch back on the PC over the network. The camera needs a wifi connection, but an apple wifi receiver is provided which has two ports so you can plug in the same port as the PC if you are limited. Seems very good. Of course though, the novelty didn't last long and it's now sitting in the corner, over there *points*. Edited March 13, 2015 by Novalee 1

nelliott Posted May 14, 2015 Posted May 14, 2015 I've used both IRIS Connect and Starlesson at various schools, personally, I think from an IT Support point of view, Starlesson is much easier to use for teachers and it is easier on the network as it isn't sending everything out through the school's WAN link.
jonnykewell1 Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 I've used Iris before in one of our Primary Schools and we also had a presentation this week from them. Crikey it's expensive for the full secondary school model, i'm not a fan of the subscription idea and the fact we have to now buy Ipads with the system. The ipod touch was more than enough, especially when using external microphones anyway. The camera quality was fine with the ipods we used before. We currently have classwatch and have had no end of trouble. We want to be able to pick clips from a full lesson, but after a couple of minutes we found the lip sync was out and the videos were useless. Will have a look at a couple of the other options that you guys have mentioned though or see if we can build our own version for a fraction of the price.
ITGURU Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 We use a standard video camera with SD storage - copy and paste the files to the network, rename to mp4 ,shrink and all done!
