Morning All,

As a school we use the Admissions Module in SIMS, to get new student data loaded in to SIMS ready for the first day of term, when we then admit the students.

I have been asked if it is possible to admit the students early, ie before the first day of term, so that other departments within the school can set up other systems which are required, such as parentpay and cashless catering, which both need UPN and Admission Numbers.

I had thought about changing our first day of term through Academic Year, but this would cause issues for attendance as the students would not be in school.

Does anybody have any ideas about how I could go about this, or will I have to go back to my manager and say sorry it will just have to wait until the first day of term?

Regards,

Always assuming that you're at a state school, the school roll, which is what the MIS is, is a legal requirement. Strictly speaking you should not admit children early - it is against regulations.

We use pre-admissions, but it does not create admission numbers.

We are an academy, so we can set out own academic dates. But don't want to do this as could affect attendance!

A couple years ago I admitted all our incoming Year 9s (we're part of a three-tier system), with their start date as September 1st.

It broke a bunch of reports that the LA had sent me, but it worked perfectly fine within the school, and we never had any issue with it - you just need to be a little bit clever in running your reports (setting effective date to the next school year and such).

You'll also have to make sure to remove any that don't come through - but this also wasn't a huge problem.

I haven't done it since though

There is guidance on SupportNet about this, it's possible, but you have to be careful, that amongst other things, you don't admit them and then someone rolls them up a year when doing promotion. Never heard the it's against regs argument before.

We don't use SIMS for a lot now, but i always admit early, and the students get an admission number and appear under the future students section.

I wouldn't advise you do it, without speaking to whoever supports you first, and also check supportnet for the documentation quick, before it is taken down.

Vik,

The link only works if you have a login to Capita MAcc, which at present I do not! I am currently waiting for it to be authorised!

Once I have a login I will take a look and let you know if it was hay help!
