Multiple site connections

Query i have regarding multiple site connections.

2 sites require access to each others servers.

We have Link2ict providing our connection at both sites to the outside world.

 

What would be the solution to have cross site access?

 

How do you guys do it?

Link2ICT will allow connection between the two sites for you I believe.

 

However, you will need to double check routing and subnets to see if the clients can talk to each other.

 

What is it for? Might it be simpler to have an externally hosted server?

What services do you have cross site? We have linked sites, with central LEA services providing centralised DNS and each site is given an IP address range allocated by the LEA. Routers etc managed with them too. For us the two sites just worked together, once we set up trusts etc.

That sounds really good. But this is Link2ICT we are talking about here and by the time you've got through the: 1st line support, 2nd line support, technical team, account manager, senior account manager, network services.... the Ether... You eventually get told no it can't be done.

Distance can be important then - is it possible to run your own fibre? Second private leased line between the sites (obviously through the exchange)? VPN?

Do both locations need to share the same sets or files? Or, for example, does Site A want to access the servers in Site B (and vice versa)?

 

We have solutions that could meet both scenarios, PM me if you’d like to discuss.

Create a VPN between the sites job done.

According to their blurb you will be connected via MPLS effectively private networks not public networks.

It should be easy for them to connect the sites with a few routing changes.

You don't actually go anywhere near the Internet until you reach their managed firewall but if they are an inept as you describe best of luck...

Contact Link2ICT and explain you want the two sites to 'talk' as it were. They'll then adjust the VLANs for both sites (at the BGfL core level) which'll allow you to create a trust between two network domains for example. The only gotcha is they'll insist you keep two different IP ranges, so it's important you create a DNS Stub Zone at each site, to allow replication if creating a trust for example.

 

All I will say is if both sites are still on 10Mbps and you plan on sharing data (shares), then it can be a squeeze. Their 100Mbps offering is more suitable.

How many users are we talking about, needing to access shares at other schools? As I say, if we're talking double figures you'll need more than 10Mbps if you're not already on 100Mbps via the BGfL.

We have single figures that require access.

School A has a shared 100mb line

School B has a 10mb line.

You may get away with it then If you contact BGfL then can give you usage levels so you have an idea of performance levels.
