Sophos is great for home now that the mess of v5 has ended. I have been using it for months and as for the resource complaints I dont have any.

I have seen the mess that the McAfee suite makes of ram usage when you install it at home. Every install I have seen of a McAfee suite (several versions) has been terrible to use and increased start up time by huge amounts. I would never recommend it to anyone. The enterprise version I hope is better but this discussion is about home edition which includes firewall etc.

As for AVG, I hate it and so far find infections on most of my mates pc's while they are running fully updated free AVG at home. It seems to cover only the most specific of virus's/trojans and generally I tell people to remove it and use our sophos or trend home suite (if not staff).

I would never really trust AVG again based on this experience and it grates me as it gives the false sense of protection when I found it provides very little.

Sophos runs fine at home for me and it picks up a LARGE amount more then AVG.

Thats my $0.02 anyway.

I used to use Eset Nod32 2.7 with a Linksys Router, Windows Firewall, not bee hit in ages. Recently moved to ESET Home Security suite, seems even better, with firewall, anti-spam, anti-virus and other tools, for around £40.00 what could be better, Eset are very proactive and better then anything around at present. As for the freebies I wouldn't really trust them.

Use AVG Free at home with Windows Defender. Hav'nt had a hit is a long time.

Try Trends housecall (housecall.trendmicro.com) and spybot and see what they find. Just because they did not get a hit it does not mean your not infected. Windows Defender has been lambasted because it only covers around a 1/3 of the active spyware out there.

I tend to recommend AVG free. You just go their website and download no messing about.

I tend to use with defender anti spyware and windows firewall.

For actual web usage though i just use a mac.

agree with you on using a mac.

av i either use avast or avg

firewall - zonealarm or comodo

anti spyware - spybot search and destroy, adaware personal se, spy sweeper ( which is not free btw ), windows defender and hijackthis for IE version 6.

But im not much of an IE user, so I normally tend to go with firefox.

Never tried nod32 so not sure about that although heard a lot of good things about it.
