New Core and Switches ( HP )

Hi Guys,

 

Just want some advice, the cisco gear in my school is over 5-6 years old and I am looking to upgrade. Now to replace it with Cisco gear is out of the question as I had a quote of over 200K for replacement switches and cores setup.

 

I am looking at HP and want to know what ones you would recommend I go with.

 

Looking for a replacement of 2 Cores and 25 switches again with a 10Gig up-link. All the switches I currently have are POE.

I have had 5406zl and 5412zl at the core for my pervious establishments, can't fault them. You can normally get deals on the 5412zl to include 4 x 10/100/1000 24 port PoE modules. The chassis also supports a variety of 10Gig options.

Ditto. 5406zl here; been running nicely for about 5 years now and no real plans to replace it just yet. Rock solid. We just recently upgraded one of the modules to a 8 x 10Gb Capable unit which our new Sixth Form connects too. I believe the premium edge features (multicast over VLANs, etc) are now bundled with it whereas we had to pay an eye watering amount for it when we introduced our VOIP system.

What sort of cost is the 5412zl?

3800's we have 45 odd of these installed last year, had problems with 2 of them but sorted via replacement items from HP without too much issue.

 

We prefer the Pizza box approach for edge switches to the 5412's, with stacking cables. the 3800's are dual PSU compatible but we have 2 spare switch units on site just in case one blows

The price of the 5412zl depends on configuration. They've also now released to 5400R zl2 range now. The J9826A is about £5800. You just add the modules you actually need - your best price will come by speaking with a HP reseller and getting them to submit a bid.

Just remember that even the 5400R is still 2:1 blocking on the 10G ports as opposed to 4:1 on the older model. If you are considering VOIP you might like to look at the 5800, 5900 series comware in an IRF as opposed to a phisical chassis(with the 5700 acting as a PE to a 5900 if necessary). The flexibility of a core distributed over multiple locations connected with SFP+ is an attraction not just for resiliency but also from a DR perspective, especially if you are virtualised.
