I'm about to buy app through VPP and I would like to be able to deploy, recall and redploy paid apps through Meraki. I only use one Apple ID though, so is that possible? @Joanne, do you know?
Joanne Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 I buy the apps from vpp... order with 'redeemable codes'. When you get the codes, copy them. Then in Meraki go to MDM, apps, add, add the app you bought on vpp, then paste the codes into the code box. Assign it to the machines you want it on. ET VOILA! My setup means I have to input the apple ID password into the ipad before it will download the app... but it installs eventually. 1
Tammie Posted March 3, 2015 Author Posted March 3, 2015 Yes, that's what I have done too... have you managed to remove an app from an iPad and push it to another? I don't think that's possible, and that's what we want to do. I've just bought 3, selecting 'managed distribution' rather than redeemable codes, and one of the iPads has the app, the other two have it but it's greyed out. I thought it might be because I've only granted the licence to one ID as usual, therefore it's only pushed it out once. If you get what I mean!!
tmoon-mint Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 With managed distribution you can revoke licences, however you must use 1 apple ID per device for this to work properly. Redeemable codes will work a generic Apple ID however this is not best practice and certainly not supported by Apple. Since the code is redeemed by the Apple ID and not the device, even though you have bought for example 30 copies of the app, the developer is only being paid once as you have only actually redeemed one. 1

I notice all my codes have been redeemed though in my VPP purchase history though? Strange, historically when I have done it this way I have noticed only 1 code gets redeemed. You will need to get in touch with someone from Apple if you plan on setting up 44 Apple IDs as after the first 4 or so your IP will be blacklisted and you wont be able to create anymore, Apple support can help you get around this restriction. It really is an absolute pain to setup and really needs to get easier in the future, but it makes deployment a breeze once its done 1

I think they are, but can't locate a link! As far as im concerned the Apple ID is for the device and not the child using it, therefore you are signing the EULA on their behalf. Cant see this being a problem. I would just create emails as iPad1@SCHOOLSDOMAIN etc.

I'll let you know what info you need and where to send it if you want? Although Apple currently have no way to batch create IDs.... awesome. 1

I wonder if that means that we (or just me?!) will lose apps that were bought via the redeemable code route and that we have deployed through meraki? If you previously purchased redemption codes through VPP, you can request to migrate these codes for use with managed distribution if the codes are unredeemed or were redeemed through Apple Configurator. wedemire Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 With Gmail you can use the + functionality to create multiple Apple IDs on one email account. http://lifehacker.com/144397/instant-disposable-gmail-addresses We don't use them as disposable, and we put the home room name or the students initial/last name behind the plus. It is a pain to set up all the IDs. We do it through iTunes, buy something free and create an account which doesn't require a payment method. We use the same info for all accounts. We use VPP to purchased managed distribution apps and assign them with Meraki. We can push and revoke and assign to another user. Revoke through this method gives us our license back instantly but keeps the app on the device for 30 days grace time. 1
