ADMaster Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 Hello all, I’m looking to get a computer that will handle the minecraft mod packs for my son. I’m a bit unsure about some of the integrated graphics, but I don’t want to spend a ton either. LosOjos Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 hi @ADMaster, the main thing with modded minecraft is RAM its about 6gb thats needed for modded then any additional for os it does use it all. bushby I agree, but would go further than that and say 8GB minimum - I'd imagine the integrated graphics will be OK, though I'd still be tempted to get a discrete GPU (doesn't need to be anything fantastic, just a mid/low range with 2GB of memory) If you can push to 16GB RAM, I would. It's an horrendously memory hungry game, and each mod you add just increases the amount of memory it'll hog. My daughter's PC has a 3.4Ghz i3, 4GB memory and a 2GB GT 640 - it runs Minecraft absolutely fine with a few mods, but some of the really big mod packs she wants to play (YogsCast Complete pack for instance) slow it to a crawl. I'm going to bump her up to 8GB soon. That first PC you listed would probably be fine with a memory upgrade.

localzuk Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 Minecraft is resource hungry across the board. I'd recommend the following: An SSD 16GB RAM Core i5 or better. I run an i5-2550k and it can't handle the larger 1.7 mod packs without my running a server and client separately. Quite simply - mods are mostly terribly optimised. Memory leaks, CPU hungry, IO heavy. So, unless you're going to stick to the light packs with less than 50 mods, then you'll struggle on those PCs listed.
ADMaster Posted March 3, 2015 Author Posted March 3, 2015 Thanks for the feedback so far. I was thinking 8GB minimum when I first started looking. However while searching for specs I come across many posts where people get better performance by not throwing all of the memory at Minecraft. I use the at launcher and don’t think it will let me give it more than 4GB, I’ll check tonight. But the OS needs memory to run too. I’ve not priced graphic cards yet. I’ll look for them and RAM upgrades this evening as well. Thanks,

LosOjos Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 You have to be running the 64 bit version of Java to allocate >4GB RAM My PC is an i5 (4.2GHz I think...) with 8GB RAM, GPU is a GTX 560 with 2GB. I allocate Minecraft 6GB of memory and I use the Sphax texture pack at 256. I use Optifine with all settings maxed out. Runs perfectly, but it uses every bit of that 6GB. Whilst I mention it, Optifine is worth installing on, well, every machine you can IMO! It gives you much more granular control of the game's settings, allowing you to get the best quality/performance balance for the machine. The settings it gives ought to be available by default really. Only problem is because it's not an official part of MC, it runs a little behind MC's version (when I checked on Saturday for instance they hadn't released a 1.8.3 version yet - the latest version of MC)
ADMaster Posted March 3, 2015 Author Posted March 3, 2015 Yes I forgot to mention the pack we like right now is the dns tech pack. I just checked on my system and I can increase the memory but I get a warning that it is not recommended. I set it to 8GB and java is only using 2.5GB. That is playing on a server, so single player might require more if I run a lot of machines. I'll setup some machines and give it a test. I can add a low end graphics card and 4GB for $100 to either of these, so that may be the way to go.

3s-gtech Posted March 4, 2015 Posted March 4, 2015 That little Lenovo maxes out at 8GB (at least, that's the max the processor will support, depends on the actual configuration) and it's probably a bit weedy in the CPU and GPU stakes for the job.
ADMaster Posted March 15, 2015 Author Posted March 15, 2015 Hi all, Thanks for all the replies. I found a good deal on an Ibuypower gaming PC. it has 8GB ram and 2GB nvidia graphics. I tested the mod pack and it seemed to do fine. I just unboxed it today, still running updates, and installing software.
