I don't mean the stupid little holes that we are shoved in - has anyone got a proper 1??

 

Anyone have any suggestions on how me and my manager can even get a desk in ours? We have to work on computers stacked on a load of paper boxes.

Health and safety.

 

You should have a place to work at (desk) and somewhere to repair equipment at - workstation/workshop style furniture.

 

They are actually legally obliged to do this, it's not optional. Either call your local authority's health and safety people to get your workplace inspected or mention it to your managers, it's shocking that you're having to work like that.

 

If you're a member of a union it's time to call them in.

You work with computers. All day. Which means they must conform to the sitting position you see all over the place.

 

We're lucky we got one when the new building was stuck on, enough room for a stack of shelves, filing cabinet, 3 large desks, 3 small desks and us.

 

Has about 8 computers (one of which is a server) and a 13 disk duplicator.

 

The main servers are in their own room next door but one.

I have a snug little room. No windows but a skylight. No fixed heating but I have a fan heater that brings it up to a nice temperature in a couple of nano-seconds. My biggest problem. Kids knocking on my door to see if I have any jobs that need doing and staff knocking on my door with jobs that need doing. I don't mind the kids.

I live in the IT Suite. Which doubles up as a classroom in the mornings and then IT lessons all afternoon. No peace at all

I've got a tiny office that I share with our Health & Safety manager (who's on a 0.2 week). It's got legal cubic metre space for 2 people, according to our H&S, but most of it's vertical! Still we have 2 desks and just have to be tidy (not natural for either of us!) It's cosy, but not as snug as the cubby hole the server's crammed into behind the photocopier!

 

The main problem is that the teachers seem to think the office is another cupboard and we regularly relocate stuff that gets dumped on it's minute floor.(Straight into the nearest classrooms)... I'm still working on a lock for the door!

I find this happens a lot where I work too, even though its the IT suite, people just seem to think if it doesn't fit anywhere else, dump it in there! I got into work this morning to find 3 CD players, a bunch of shoe boxes and about 5 used coffee cups! :?

Our PTA were sorting out stuff for the Christmas Fair as I left today. I dread to think what wil be in the ICT Suite and my office in the morning!

I share an office with the teacher in charge of e-Learning. The 2 technicians have an office between them and we have a seperate room for the server room.

 

This only came into place in September as I moved to the new build and the 2 technicians moved into my old office. Most of the stuff was removed and its a decent size for 2 people - we wouldn't be able to fit 3 in however.

Well I'm leaving a weeks time but in the new school whoever takes over from me will have a 30m2 office (albeit triangular!) and a 25m2 server room all to themselves, although I have strongly recommended adding a technician as there's simply too much work here for someone to do when they're also meant to be developing ICT use in the school..

We will be getting a nice new office soon, then we will also use our existing office as our build room

I'm looking at office space for another reason, and have found on the HSE site a recommendation

Space - provide a minimum of 11 cubic metres for each person permanently occupying a workplace.

We used to have a tiny office for me and the server room where my 2 techs work. We've just had a toilet conversion finished for us. Best toilet conversion i've seen. Big enough for 4 (maybe 5 if they give me another tech) which will be me, 2 techs and a member of admin who will operate a helpdesk for us. Also has room for a tea area which might fit a sofa, and a big brick-walled former disabled toilet that is going to be filled with crap. i mean consumables and stock.

 

It's only taken me three years to get it. The server room is becoming what it is meant to be, rather than an office that all and sundry walk through.
