Case/CPU Fan

Hello All,

 

I am looking at a new case in the next couple of months, rather than go Apple and spend lots of cash I can't justify to myself, I am likely now to stick with my current windows based setup going forward, my Thermaltake Tsunami Dream isnt cutting it anymore, LEDs have broken and some of the case screws have lost their threads, added to which the top of it with its usb2 panel has never really worked properly.

 

Case wise - I am looking at a Zalman Z9/Z11 as I fancy mounting my PSU at the bottom now to take the heat of the PSU fan outside and away from the motherboard. Does anyone have one ? care to recommend an alternative?

 

I had my CPU fan die a while back and replaced it with one which wasnt 100% compatible, its a XeroCool AM2 CPU fan and has 3 pins instead of the four that it wants on the motherboard and it runs a fair bit hotter than my previous CPU fan,(I run an AMD Phenom II X6 1050T - Socket AM3) - I think its an AM3+ processor from what I recall and want a decent cpu fan/heatsink recommendation with the case above,

I have one of these on my workbench at the moment Thermaltake - Global - Level 10 GTS - VO30001W2N

The bulges on the side i thought looked a bit weird, but they are quick release hard drive caddys. A neat idea but the case is about twice the price of your Zalmans.

This PC is running an AMD FX-8350 and just has the stock cooler. One fan on the back, one on the top and one blowing over the drives.

I'll run heavy load in the morning and see what temperatures it gets to if you like.

I was suckered in by the little flip cover on the reset button tbh! But it's actually a really nice case. Space at the top for a 240mm radiator for your liquid cooling, PSU at the bottom and three fans already in place.

Thanks for the suggestions so far, I couldnt run with the stock cooler with the Phenom it was like a hurricane on the unit with that installed.

 

I had a nice coolermaster cpu fan which kept it all nice and cool, but the fan died on the unit and I bought a Xerocool quiet cooler, which turned out to be the wrong type of connector - I need a 4 pin on this machine and it came with three (think it was AM2 and not AM3+ compatible which I needed).

 

I don't know if I fancy water cooling tbh seems quite fiddly and knowing my luck I would have it leak all over the motherboard or something daft

 

I like that you can stick the PSU to the bottom in most cases now, taking the heat to the bottom of the case.

Ive got a corsair 750D which has the mount for the PSU at the bottom and seems a nice case , maybe nzxt or bit fenix ??

I'd never done the liquid cooling before, but decided to give it a go this time around (a 4790k deserved more than just a fan i figured).

 

I'm using this: Hydro Seriesâ„¢ H100i Extreme Performance CPU Cooler

 

It was really really easy to fit. The cooler was already linked to the radiator, all i had to do was fir the radiator to the top of my case and, fix the fans to the radiator and then fix the cooler over the cpu. Took maybe half an hour. And the whole thing is closed loop, sealed and ready to go so no need to worry about it going everywhere

Don't be too complacent about closed loop watercooling setups.

The guy in the links above had a Corsair unit where the coolant somehow thickened and rendered the thing useless.

 

Not saying that it'll happen to you but be sure to keep an eye on it

Thanks for the advice a while back all, I was having a couple of problems it seems, the CPU fan was definitely not the right type for the AMD Phenom I have, haven't ordered a new case yet as I think a CPU fan has sorted my temperature issues.

 

I bought a Coolermaster Hyper 103 and have spent an hour fitting it this morning, I also had a look at the Airflow of the case fans I had and sorted that out in the case I have, I put the more powerful of the fans at the intake this morning to pull air through it and one of the fans was fitted wrongly at the back, blowing air in, which is why my idle temps seemed to be around 55/65 degrees celsius.

 

Now its hovering around 35 degrees and I no longer have a "Hot to Touch" case after an hours gaming.
