Printer won't grab IP, but Laptop WILL on same ethernet wall jack port

I have an HP LaserJet M401N, brand new out of the box.

 

Its set to DHCP. Refuses to grab IP on this 1 certain wall jack.

 

I plug a laptop into the same wall jack and immediately get IP and internet connection.

 

The M401N is at its latest firmware. Have done all the usual stuff: reboot printer several times, shutdown and pull power from printer, tried various ethernet cables at both ends of the LAN drop.... Laptop gets 1000mbps connection, but Printer doesn't get IP at all.

 

I have no idea what could be causing that. Any suggestions?

Anyway on the switch port to set the duplex mode / speed on the switch port to either

 

100 mbps full duplex

 

Or

 

10 mbps full duplex

 

Think the data rate is too fast for the printer ??

I have seen stub entries where a mac has not been assigned an ip but its listed blank in dhcp and until I removed the entry the device wouldnt get an ip.

 

I meant how to alter the switch ports duplex mode and or fix it to say 100 mbps full duplex ?

Try another network cable, had issues in the past where the connections didn't make good contact on one device but were fine on another. (the device it worked on was a cable tester which made it confusing!)

It's interesting what you say about the laptop successfully establishing a 1000Mbit link and getting an IP lease (with no apparent problems I assume). I've seen it the other way around, in that 100Mbit devices connect fine, but 1000Mbit don't. The problem was that only 4 of the 8 wires were properly crimped in the socket. 100Mbit (100BaseT) requires only 4, but 1000Mbit (1000BaseT) requires all 8.

 

One possibility is the printer has been briefly plugged into another socket (on another VLAN) and the DHCP server has leased an IP for it, but in another subnet. The DHCP server has spotted that a device with the same MAC already has a lease (but on another scope) and is refusing to hand out another IP?

 

However, I still think it's more likely a wiring issue (layer 1) rather than a protocol/software issue.

Have a look at the port settings on the switch and see if there are any energy settings enabled. On Cisco switches, for some devices you have to disable these types of settings for them to connect successfully.

Another thing to check is that if STP is on, on the switch make sure it is set to access/portfast for the printer as it may be taking too long to exit blocking mode by which point the printer has given up waiting for a response from the DHCP server.

Unbelievably, the cable run was OPEN on 2 of its wires. Had the network boys come fix it and it worked instantly after that. Not sure how that happened, as no one usually is in the server room behind the patch panel... but someone had to have loosened it. Thanks to all that replied. Good guesses.
