Exchange Spam Filter

Hello,

We're having serious problems with our filter system allowing lots of spam through.

Can anyone recommend any good quality software for Exchange 2013 that will stop practically ALL spam?

EOP is only for 365 though, if I'm not mistaken?

Whereas we don't have that, we just have Exchange 2013.

i believe it works for exchange 2013 (locally hosted) as well. Mail goes to them first, then forwarded to your exchange server for delivery.

I see! This may be useful then, do you have any idea how to set this up though?

Afraid not, i have forefront for exchange on my local exchange server and will move to office 365 soon. Hoping they have a spam solution connected to their exchange online already.

Eset mail protection is frankly outstanding, but at about £4.50 per mail box it's not a cheap option.

I'm struggling to remember the exact terms of the licensing, but I believe it is an initial cost followed by a lower ongoing subscription.

Is there a trial download for this product? Also, does it just sit on the Exchange server or is this endpoint?

This may offer some clarification regarding Exchange Online Protection (EOP)

I used to use ASSP which is open source and uses a DNSBL among other things. It is an SMTP proxy so it can run infront of any SMTP server. you can also hook it into AD to auto whitelist outgoing mails among other things.

It is perl based, I used Cygwin to get it running on an exchange 2003 server. Haven't tried it with modern exchange though.

Only caveat we had with it was a default option set to only let 100 mails per hour in from a specific address (one of our LEA forwarders sent more than that and got rejected)

If I were setting it up again, I'd make a new Linux VM, stick ASSP on it on port 25, get exchange listening on 125 and forward mail forward that way. Also any problems with the spamfilter and you can immediately swap the ports pack over.

 

We now use Sophos Puremessage as the school wanted something with an easy interface they could use; IMO it is inferior; it lets a lot of spam through and the only configuration options appear to be a score slider just like exchanges built in IMF. My users are complaining of spam but I can't do anything about it at the moment.

If we had a forefront license/setup I'd go with that. Is EOP an add on cost?
