Nvidia Model codes - whats best? GS/GTS/GT

Whats the order the models go in? Which ones better, a GTS or a GT?

^ while the order is technicly correct the 8800GT is currently above the GTS until the new revision of GTS is out which i think is also a 512mb card

 

new revision is out in either this month or next month but i havent really been keeping up to speed with the latest info

How does this chart work then? Which is better out of the GT, the GTS 320bit and the GTS 256bit with 512ram and higher clocks?

Thats how i understand the performance is, the differance between the 320 and 640 GTS is relevant only when using larger reolutions/games with larger or higher quality textures

I think that the throuput is what you need to be looking at... and the thickness of your wallet of course.

Which of the 8800s are PCI-e 2.0? And does it really matter if my mobo is only pci-e 1.1?

PCI-e 2.0 is double the bandwidth of 1.1

as far as im aware the 8800GT and GTS512mb are the only PCI2.0 cards on the market

 

i wouldnt be able to give an honest answer on wether 2.0 cards are backwards compatible with 1.1 only motherboards but id of thought they were, just means you wont get as much (not that its all used anyway) bandwidth from the PCI-E slot

I was looking at the 8800s yesterday after I ended up getting some new coolers for my 7800s and I came to the conclusion that it wasnt worth paying for anything more than an 8800 GT unless you had plenty of cash.

I will probably wait for the 9000 series or what ever comes out next and pick up two high end 8800s.

I also found it more than mildly irritating that I can get a card that is twice as powerful (GPU and ram speed) for half of the price that I paid for and equivalent series of card just over 18 months or so ago.

Lots of places do kits for around 150-250, There's a few kits for 90 - 100 but without wanting to sound snobbish water cooling over your electrical devices is not something you really want to skint out on!.

i was just about to recommend you a really good website for decent kit ChrisH but it seems he's closed his business if you ever heard of it extremeprometeia.com was an excellent site for top notch cooling equipment, got my mach2 GT from there (swapped a laptop for it haha)

As the coolers on my cards were not upto the job anymore resulting it plenty of crashing. It seems ok but I kept al-tabing last night to check the temps

Its taken about 15 degrees off my cards. Only problem was I had to buy extra ram coolers for the card which is less than ideal but should keep me going for a bit.

2.0 is backwards compatible with 1.1 but not 1.0a (apparently some manufacturers are offering a VGA card BIOS to take the card to 1.1 giving compatability with 1.0a slots)

 

Its been shown that there is no real performance decrease using the current 2.0 cards in 1.1 slots. Although future cards may benefit from the extra bandwidth.

8800GT 512MB < This would be my pick

8800GTS 640MB < this is the old model, its out performed by the above card so I wouldnt bother with this one

8800GTS 512MB < not out until the 11th I believe and no solid price info

 

All of the 8800GT cards are PCI Express 2.0 as well as the new 8800GTS 512MB.
