I took that to mean "you'll be able to get it for free during its first year of existing, after which point if you want a copy you'll have to pay, but if you have it already, it'll continue to get updates and be usable for free after that 1 year". Is that right?

 

Its an interesting tactic, certainly. A loss leader to get people back on-board after Windows 8. Their "single OS" plan for multiple devices also seems a lot more well thought out too - with them finally accepting that different devices have different UI requirements.

In one the articles I read the words 'windows as a service' appeared. So my guess will be they give it away for free to get people onboard as others above have suggested. Then they bundle the windows license in with Office 365. they way it could still be 'free' just so long as you pay for it.

If that means "agree to install all relevant Windows Updates and operate the latest virus definitions." then I'm game. If it means "agree to automatically install whatever arbitrary programs we think you need, without any form of notification." then nada.

It will probably work the same way as it does in the Technical Previews...

Like Chrome OS? Its update process is often seen as one of its best features.

Wouldn't know. Never used it.

 

What I was referring to is things like Microsoft deciding "Hey, we just bought Skype, so now you have to have it installed and can't uninstall it because you agreed to this! Wheeeyyy isn't it great? You'll love it!"

 

I know they didn't actually do that with Skype, but I don't know any other software they have their eyes on, so it'll do for the purpose of example.

I can't see that happening myself, but if they do, Windows Store apps are really easy to uninstall (unlike the bloatware you find on certain brands of Android devices).

 

Free upgrades from Server 2012 R2 to Server 2015 as well?

Yes.

 

* If you have Software Assurance, although technically that isn't free. :)

Those are reporters so they will use what they want.

 

Bit of a kick in the teeth for the bloke speaking at the front to look down and see a row of macs in front of him.
