I found a problem with this on some VMware hosts the other day!

 

Check what nic driver version you're on, the latest on the Intel site has stopped my hosts being silly for 25 days and counting!

The VMware version numbers are different but there's some new ones there.

 

Worth a punt as my problem was iSCSI too!

Was it giving you a high System Process reading?

Nah, on VMware it behaves differently but it's all to do with nic's and deadlocks leading to resource queueing.

 

Updating the drivers should be a good move for you I'd say.

managed to update the drivers and i now have a steady 1-3% cpu with a hand full of users on the server. Guess its a waiting game until tomorrow. Hope its fixed the issue

Just looked at our CPU usage on the file server again and we are back at square one. Its gone sky high again! I have used process explorer to look at the threads being used by the system process . Take a look at the screen shot. No idea what the thread is doing though.

Any tips on finding what that process is ?

Its the kernel, so in other words it could be coming from anywhere, the address at the end doesn't help narrow it down either sadly.

It details similar debugging using some additional tools, though it is targeted at Vista/Win Server 2008.

 

Obviously you'll need to swap some things out, ntkrnlpa.exe to ntoskrnl.exe for example.

Hi all, Managed to get this sorted out (Touch Wood). The issue was with the network drivers and Virtual Machine Queues. Once i had disabled this the CPU dropped. All has been fine since monday.
