Intel S775 Chipsets and motherboard recommendations

Im looking at buying a new motherboard, cpu, gfx card and ram. Im looking at a core2duo E6750 1333FSB with an nVidia 8800 series gfx card.

 

Which motherboard would you recommend? And what about the chipset?

 

Ive not been a fan of intel chipsets in the past but cant find many nVidia based boards, what are the various chipsets like?

 

Any gen? :beer:

 

Its doubtful ill be using SLI any time soon. And i wont be an extream overclocker as the systems for music production before gaming, but abit of an overclock wont go amiss.

i can highly recommend the P35 chipset range, ive not heard much good coming from the X38 chipset though(just had a look at some and buga me there expensive too)

 

other than that theres not much to choose from, the gigabyte DS3/4 and DQ6 were some of the most popular boards for quite a few months and ive not heard many bad comments from them

 

dont think its long till the new revision 8800GTS is out too if you didnt already know, if your not going to wait for that then the 8800GT is your best bet for now

definately intel and nvidia at the moment, AMD have failed to live up to expectation on either the phenoms or there 3xxx series which is a pitty as i hate to see AMD doing as badly as they have done in recent months

 

plus i think theres only 3 phenoms (?) out at the moment, the 9500, 9600, 9700s and there all around the same price of the Q6600 which is better than the phenoms clock for clock (or so online benchmarks and reviews show anyway) so yea Intel and nvidia

 

i hope AMD do get there act together though, ive been on nvidia and intel for a year and i like to go back and forth seeing as what usually happens is one day nvidia and intel will be best, then ati and amd, rinse and repeat, but sadly its looking like intel and nvidia are goign to rule the roost for 2 years running this time

I guess my main concern atm is the intel chipsets. Nearly all our PCs at school have intel chipset and to put it very nicely they are exreamely poo!!!! But i guess its unfair to judge all intel chipsets by its budget range...

 

My choices seem to be;

 

Budget - P35 or NV650. NV supports SLI but gets mixed reviews on the compatibity of the chipset. P35 is crossfire so it takes away that option of an easy upgrade in the future...

 

High end - X38 or NV680i. NV has SLI but again has mixed reviews on compatibilty.

P35 + 4GB Ram + 8800GT 512MB + Q6600 or E6750

 

Intel chipsets generally tend to be the most stable (although I have had some really great nForce boards) the only department Intel tend to lack in would be thier integrated graphics.

 

While the 650i/680i tend to be good also there are question marks over the compatibility with future quad core chips. If this does not bother you then these are also a good option.

j17sparky - id assume you'd be using DDR2 for now and upgrading to DDR3 in the future? seeing as DDR3 costs about £200 for 2GB at its cheapest at the moment

 

nice to have a bit of upgradability in there though it'll probably be another 6months before DDR3 gets to an affordable price and the cheapest stuff then will probably still have terrible latencys

 

i guess i didnt help much there
