speckytecky Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 Yikes, not much of a belt is it. I'm in Wiltshire and we don't seem to have any at all - which was what I always suspected with the way the Local Authority allows practically unfetterd building on green fields.

I see plenty of space in rural America and Australia. Maybe we should blame other countries immigration policies for our over crowding?

I strongly suspect that there are more houses that should be available than we are led to believe; definitely more existing sites that should be being redeveloped than are acknowledged. How many of us regularly drive past office/light industrial units that have gone up and remain 1/2 populated while another goes up a few miles away? How do the owners make any money? Some of that land may not be suitable for housing, but surely it would be a better use than another load of empty units? Don't get me started on second homes or people/councils who leave properties empty so that they can knock it down and redevelop to "executive" housing. Well we need a decreased population, if the world didn't have population problems then we wouldn't need more houses Aye. Back OT: no green round our way either. There is a strip near the motorway (which is already pretty much nose-to-tail in the mornings) that is earmarked for a new town for "much needed" housing. Nothing to do with Boris and his cronies pushing those nasty workers out of London so that they don't have to share living space with oiks whilst skimming profits off two loads of construction. For the second time today . Maybe I should take my meds . 1

There's a load of empty dwellings in many parts of the country and then there's the obscenity of people having second and more homes. In Cornwall and the Welsh Tourist areas for example the local youngsters can't afford to buy homes in their own villages and towns because wealthy folk have priced them out of the market. We need houses...

You'd hope that was because there was adequate protection already wouldn't you? I suspect it is more to do with the value of the land for building; and who would profit from it.
