Sunnyknight Posted January 9, 2015 Posted January 9, 2015 Got to be honest, I'm with @Arthur here - at the risk of being flamed out of the thread, surely physical fan monitors serve no more purpose than to make your PC look cool? I can understand buying a hardware fan controller if you have a lot of fans in the case to keep in sync, but does anyone ever really go "ooh, fans are at 80%, better boost that up a little!" If you OC on Air, they're a godsend. Also, fan controllers can be used in a WC kit, so if your RAD fans are dying, you'll start getting klaxons on the device alerting you. Plus, manual adjustment of fan speeds within 2 seconds, is just, nice. 1

I was hoping to at a later date get more fans so I could setup the Kelvin S36 in a push / pull config and when it is under full load or chugging away, I don't want all the fans sounding like a plane taking off so I can use the physical touch screen fan controller to control the six or so fans without having to use software and alt tab or whatever To start with I will use the onboard motherboard PWM connectors, haven't had to do any fan controlling as not had a desktop PC in a long time , nor have I built any PC's in a long time either ( years ) so almost like Im a noob again. I did say maybe ref fan controllers etc , unless there is somewhere that I can cheaply get 1 to 3 way pwm fan splitter cables and use the PWM connectors on the motherboard ? As stated above the external fan controller looks fancy and is touch screen etc Not flaming anyone - just purely stating my opinion etc, doesn't mean everyone has to agree with me Edited January 9, 2015 by mac_shinobi

Actually, yes.. If I'm playing a game, I will want my ambient temperature to be cooler so I'll put all of my fans at 100%. If I'm watching a movie etc I want my computer to be silent so I'll creep the speeds down until I'm happy and temperatures are stable. I also watercool both my GPU and CPU and control the pump via my fan controller.. so yes, it's quite useful. I'd much rather have direct hardware control than use 3rd party software. 1

Aerocool > Products > Peripheral I'd actually use Rainmeter on the second screen if I could get the skins I chose to work with my mobo. However, as the only time the fans need adjusting is during gaming sessions and then I don't want to be faffing with that sort of thing (some of the fans are controlled by the mobo anyway) I just crank the front intake fans up. If I was curious there's always the mobo (MSI) app.

I've got them running at 7v (8x12cm fans, 6 on a 360rad and 2 on a 120). I've also got the pump wired up to the motherboard so it'll beep at me and shutdown if the pump ever fails. 1

As someone with OCD, the SpeedFan icon sitting staring at me can be a life or death situation! There is also the issue of power, some mobo headers may not be able to handle quite as much power as a direct-to-PSU controller can. This also means you'll get higher RPM speeds connected to the controller than the mobo. If you've got high amperage fans, you could burn out your mobo header plugging them into it.. But right now I'm reading reviews of that Fractal Design Define R5 and thinking this, this is the one, my beauty, my precious, come to me, be mine... I wouldnt hesitate to buy that case myself, they really are that good. Spend the extra, dont regret it! 1
