Sophos Enterprise Console - Upgrade, Migrate, Start over?

Hi all

Before I pull all my hair out, I'd appreciate some advice if anyone has any to share...

I've been having lots of problems with my Sophos Enterprise Console installation and wanted to know if I'm going to cause more trouble for myself if I just set up a new installation on a new server, rather than struggle on through the problems I've got.

The story so far:

  • Attempt to migrate Sophos 5.2.1 from existing 2003 server to new 5.2.1 installation on 2012 server
  • Encounter many and varied errors along the way while following the migration document. Spend hours fixing each one, trying again and getting one step closer until I encounter an error I can't figure out.
  • Decide to upgrade the existing 5.2.1 installation to 5.2.2 before trying migration again
  • Encounter many and varied errors along the way while following the upgrade document. Spend hours fixing each one, trying again and getting one step closer until I encounter an error I can't figure out.
  • End up with a broken 5.2.1 installation on 2003 server. Try to resolve issue... (Can you guess where this is going?)
  • Encounter many and varied errors along the way while following relevant Sophos technical document(s).
  • Still can't make it work.

I'm now three days in and worse off than when I started. Admittedly I've not been in contact with Sophos themselves yet, but I want to get this done and I have a feeling I'd take a lot more back and forth with them to fix than I have the patience for.

Am I likely to run into any major problems by installing afresh on a new server and re-protecting all my clients from there, instead of upgrading?

Thanks in advance!

Going with /u/caffrey, spin up a new VM. Run the two side by side. Migrate a room at a time. Quicker and easier.

This is exactly how I did it - worked a charm.

Those are all wonderful responses! I'm glad you've not found any ill-effects of a fresh start.

That's just what I'll try. Thanks!

It's surprisingly flexible at re-pushing out. I retired an old Sophos EC host for a separate domain (domain A), and moved all the PCs on that domain over to an existing server on domain A (trusted by B). Just pushed out the client from the console, after disabling the old server. Sure enough, up they popped. Few issues due to differing permissions on the Updates folder for us, but pretty easy overall.
