Just browsing the interweb and I cam across this. It looks quite fun and interesting to do. Thought I would share incase anyone else wants to give it a go as well. Also does anyone use anything else for a Home storage device for the whole family?

Thanks :)

I have a 4Tb WD Mycloud on my home network - £160 from Maplins last March. Never let me down, apart from I suffered a power cut during my first firware update!

Just as well I have a D2D2D backup discipline at home here :D

What's the movie playback like on tablet/phone devices like as my mum and dad just use iPad's so I need to make sure they can watch movies okay on it :)

I have a HP N54 microserver running FreeNas with 6 x 1tb hard drives. Just sits there running my various programs (Plex, Sabnzbd, CouchPotato, Sickbeard etc) without issue :)

Playback is faultless over wireless between my virgin superhub and Blackberry playbook :)

Are you talking about my home or office one, the office one we don't back up as we just use it for storing iso files, legacy drivers and a landing for temp data transfers. My home one I use Acronis true image.

I meant disk to disk to disk backup - I have 2x2tb drives in my home server which are mirrored, which then is mirrored to my NAS :)

Have a look into Tonido. Works on all devices internally and externally it's free as well.

I have it running on my HP MicroServer N40l, I liked it that much I got the school to buy into the enterprise version called FileCloud for our remote access. :)

Can't beat Synology or QNAP IMO.

I have the DS414 with 4 x 4TB drives. Not cheap though!

Thinking of getting one of these but the 415+ version as it has better read and write speeds for a media storage box / cctv box.

Have about 12tb for vids etc etc streaming to tvs, and then the other for the cctv system.

+thanks

When you say 415+, do you mean 415j? If so, that's a tripped down version. The processor is nowhere near as good and you get half the amount of RAM.

Would definitely be worth getting the 415, or even the 414 over the 415j.

I'm pretty sure there was a review on CNET that said the same thing.

This.

In comparison is has much better write speeds to the 414 and better read speeds.
