We've used those in the past but found too many of our devices just wouldn't take to the gunk. Too many things shiny or otherwise varnished. It's a fair enough system if it works, though, but very laborious.

you can buy different compounds for bare metal/glass and whatnot, did you try those?

The thing i loved about the permanent etching compound was the look of sheer horror on the art departments faces when we applied it to the imacs they "needed". :troll:

No. Because of said laborious effort. When the higher-ups from the council declared everything must be security tagged, it would have taken way too much time to do everything, so we bought the pre-made asset tags with barcodes and asset numbers instead. They just say "PROPERTY OF $SchoolAddress DO NOT REMOVE" and have a barcode and a number.

Ah, yes. How to destroy £thousands of equipment in ≈30 seconds

Any particular reason you made this rather than something like Spice works? :)

Spiceworks is horribly bloated and very bad UI design imo.

As you can probably see from all my projects, I like a good clean, fast interface with no bloat ;)

Everything I make is usually PHP and/or MYSQL which makes it easy to mess about with and of course free to use :p

I use OCS Inventory NG (OCS Inventory NG | Home)

Requires an agent (GPO / sccm / login scriptable..) , but does pull in a lot of data from the PCs (Windows / Mac / Linux)

It can also be tied in with another System GLPI for more controlled asset management

These are the headings for my excel sheet. Had to go round every room and find items above the value of £50. This is approved by our auditors. All items are engraved with the unique item number (XYZ0001) and smartwatered

Item Number||Location||Item||Manufacturer||Model||Serial No||Date Purchased||Date Withdrawn||Reason for Withdrawal||Cost||Invoice No.||Purchase Order No.||ACCIDENTAL DUPLICATE||Notes (repair notes)||NETWORK NAME

I think EduGeek should make their own Helpdesk and Inventory software and make it look pretty :) I'm sure they would do a far better job than Spiceworks... hint-hint @Dos_Box @ZeroHour

Manageengine is a pretty decent helpdesk and the problem with inventory software is that it only catches the windows stuff. As far as i'm aware it's everything over £50 so that's cameras/lenses/macs/ipads/voice recorders/younameit. It's a hell of a job to set up in the first instance but i suggest telling staff you're doing it and dig out everything from their back rooms and go around with paper and a pen with the excel sheet printed out and write it all in. You might find, however, that whoever does your PAT testing has an inventory of at least some of your stuff.

We are using sharepoint 2010 to store all ict inventory and have different views depending on options ticked i.e. Printer, projector, netbooks, laptops etc.

Filemaker Pro to handle the data and the admin paperchase and asset security labels from seareach. Scanning technology from intermec, makes my office sound like Asda on a Saturday morning. The dedicated scanning hardware has made the big difference, I was able to zap 500 desktops details off the delivery truck into my system in the morning and spent the entire afternoon unboxing and sticking asset labels on them all. NM was pleased as it previously took his team four weeks to enter all that data… ended up doing a full audit of the college soon after that… Now I'm working on how to record regular audits by room. I guess I don't like the paperwork in some way…

We use an access database and put asset tags on everything. Hard work to setup but now it's easy to keep up to date.

I am in the process of changing our Excel Spreadsheet to an Access Database. We have over 2000 items including not just the PC's and Laptops but also IWB's, Projectors, Camera's etc. Would you mind PM'ing me with a heads up on the different tables you have used.
