Apple Configurator stuck on installing iOS

The solution is simple but quite annoying I have to say.

 

So if you prepare iPads without restoring a backup or installing apps straight from the prepare menu it will work brilliantly. When you restore backup to a few iPads they all have at some point the same name so a few iPads will get stuck on "waiting to authorise apps" simply because it will try to redeem a code for the same iPad because it hasn't been renamed yet.

 

What I do is to restore a backup to all iPad without pushing the apps yet. Once all the iPad are ready with their names, I go to supervise drag the iPads into a group and then I apply profiles and apps to the group.

If you are installing IOS8 make sure you are running OSX yosemite and the latest version of apple configurator, the old version had a lot of issues with IOS8.

Just for information, I attempted to run an install of IOS 8.1.2 direct to one iPad (as in Settings >Software Update on the iPad, no iTunes and no Mac). It hung after I clicked on Agree and refused to go any further, with the EULA sitting there on the screen in Settings mode no matter how many times I tried to click on Agree.....

Try a hard reboot and install again.

I had loads of issues trying to get Apple configurator to update ipads, it hung/timed out/failed all the time.

 

In the end, it seemed that going through a proxy really caused problems, I let the configurator Mac go out the firewall directly (http/https) and this worked fine for all of the updates.

I'm seeing this issue as well with our new iPad minis, fresh out of the box, when trying to Prepare them for the first time in Apple Configurator. Most of the time the Prepare works, but randomly I will have one that gets stuck on installing iOS with 4 minutes remaining (what is it with the 4 minutes??). So far I've been lucky and if I do a force quit on Apple Configurator, reopen it and try to Prepare the errant iPad again, it goes through the second time without a problem. I know this thread is a bit stale, but I thought I would post, since this is the first thread I've encountered that seems to address the same issue that I've been experiencing -- Apple Configurator crashing while preparing iPads when restoring a backup. I originally experienced this with OSX 10.9.x with AC 1.6 and batches of iPad 2 with a mixture of starting iOS between 7.1.2 and 8.1.3 (sorry, some students upgraded over the course of the year despite instructions not to, and I can't nail down whether a specific starting iOS might be the source of the problem). I thought an upgrade to Yosemite and AC 1.7 would resolve, but not so. And it doesn't matter the generation, because I continued to experience this with Yosemite and AC 1.7 and brand-new, out-of-the-box iPad Airs.

 

So I agree that the restore from backup is the hang-up. What doesn't make sense, though, I have a single third-party app installed in the backup image, and I still have to "push" the app (through my MDM) to get it on the restored/prepared devices. To that extent, the idea that the cause of the crash is an app license check when multiple devices have the same name at any given point doesn't necessarily ring true, but then, again, I don't know how/when/why that app license check would happen during the prepare process.

 

With my next batch of Airs, I'll try to wait longer in between connecting each device while preparing (that tedious process necessary to ensure that the sequential numbering matches the cart slot number).
