Hi everyone

 

was hoping someone could recommend a 10GbE switch as i am currently looking at replacing our current Powerconnect 1 gigabit switches and moving down the route of 10gbe.

 

I was looking at NetGear Prosafe GS752TXS-100EUS which is a 48 port switch with 4x10gigabit sfp+ ports and also a NetGear Prosafe GS728TXS-100NES which is a 24 port switch with 2 x 10 gigabit sfp+ ports.

 

Can anyone else recommend similar switches which they may have used before or are currently using?

We did a big switch upgrade last summer - all new cabling and switches throughout the school. In the end, we went with two HP A5800-24G switches for the core and HP 2920 24/48 port models for the edge switches. We had quotes for various other models (Netgear, Juniper, etc), with various other features, but HP came out best value (I particularly wanted the 2920's OpenFlow support).

 

We went with two 24-port core switches so we could fit more fibre tranceivers in - 9 in the end. We bought the hardware from networking, wireless, ip telephony & security specialists - Switchshop Ltd, who's advice, help and patience was much appreciated.

Not Netgear. Never Netgear. Not unless the problem you're trying to solve is "my network is working too well, how can I 'fix' that?".

 

We tend to use the larger chassis-based HP procurve switches but I would agree with the suggestions from dhicks for smaller models. HP aren't perfect but are pretty damn good. Certainly a good balance between cost, reliability, etc.

My current host of Netgears that I'm using, if you can forgive their crappy web GUI, have been far far far more reliable than the Cisco SB300's I have at another site which enjoy a nice bit of packet loss. Nothing wrong with a decent NetGear ProSafe stuff.

We have, well had (more on this below) 5 x Nethear GSM7352S Layer3 as our core for the last 4 years with about 40 of the GS752TXS switches across our campus (on average 3 or 4 of them in a stack) ....

 

The core has just been replaced by something Netgear is bringing out in January which we have had early access to for a few months. Our "old core" now acts as a second core and has our Hyper-V replica connected to it.

 

Each of our cabinets (inc 5 outer buildings) connect back to our core via 2 x 10gb links , our Media & Film building connect at 4x10gb links.

 

Underneath our new core we have 2 x XSM7224 linked to the core via 4x10gb using MLAG all of our servers are also on 10gb NICs. Except for one server that is about to be retired.

 

Runs about 1500 end user devices for 1300 students, 300 staff and has CCTV, Voip, building management, BYOD, etc all running on it

 

They have pretty much all the IEEE standards and the code base is pretty identical to cisco - in fact wwe had a Cisco ASA and our Voip system installed recently we had a Cisco CCIE engineer install them - we let him have a nose at the core config and he said it's virtually identical commands.

 

If it's good enough for a Cisco CCIE (routing and switching), then it's good enough for me.

I suppose at the end of the day it's all about what works well for the institution and people will always have a preference for one thing over another - not just in IT but life in general

We replaced our 3Coms 4800's and 5500's with HP 3800 last year. Out of 48 units we've had problems with 2. One was a stacking issue that required switch replacement and currently got another that half the switch has PoE issues.

 

Some HP's can have their PoE issues from what I've seen but as long as you get the support it doesn't really matter, we have a few spares on the shelf for urgent contingency but not a cheap option. The 3800's have optional 2nd PSU, and space for 10Gbe stacking modules on the back.

 

I think I agree with @dhicks on the Value point we did look at Cisco but couldn't get a quote returned in time????

 

We have a few Core Switches on the edge ( 5400 ) and they are sure to get replaced on next refresh or even before, problem with the 5400s is although they can have up to 4 PSU's there are only 2 per side and if one drops you will prob notice some issues straight away.

The new Netgear Chassis model is available in January 15 and will take on HP's chassis head to head.

This is ultimately because Netgear finally understand that you can't get the same throughput out of stacking as you can from a chassis.

The chassis also allows for a greater degree of customisation at the core.

 

A lot of Netgear stacking arrangements involve over complicated auxiliary modules stacking cables, HDMI, DAC etc and you end up with far too many unused Copper ports.

So a completely new Chassis option will complement the range of stackables.

 

I've been installing Netgears for almost 15 years and never had a problem with the L2 L3 managed kit.

The cheaper GSxxx models have some quirks but this can be said the same of the HP "Value" kit.

You can't compare the build quality of a £200 switch to a £700 switch.

Buy cheap buy twice regardless of vendor!

 

I bought a few of the early HP branded 3Com units in error and never managed to get them to play nicely in an all HP fabric.

Never again...

I've got netgear site wide and they have been rock solid. Never had one go wrong in 5 years!

 

I'd be interested if you find a 10GBE model and particularly if its noisy or not.

 

I'd probably go with this one

You do realise that is 10GBe Copper with SFP+ uplinks?

They do an all SFP+ top of rack unit as well.

Also worth noting they will play nicely with any SFP modules or DAC cables unlike some vendors!

This is what I have and it's an immense piece of kit - so much so that the beta Chasis became our production core very quickly.

I did the same and had exactly the same reaction. I actually managed to return one and get it swapped for the hp model i actually wanted!

 

I've only ever used HP and Extreme

Networks in production and if recommend either of them. Extreme if you have the money, hp if not. I've used Cisco in labs and test environment and is okay, but for the cost of prefer extreme.

Er I'm still under an NDA but..........yes that is what I have had for nearly 6 months.

 

I've asked NetGear (so not to breach the NDA) what I can disclose, but as m25man has pointed to the link I assume it's starting to become public knowledge.

 

I spoke to a number of netgear vendors at Old Trafford (Manchester Utd) recently about the M6100 and they were impressed.

 

The passive backplane is a major plus

This was BEFORE we put all of our network and servers through it. But from the off our key Virtualization cluster and web traffic went through it

 

All of the green cables are 10gb on our virtualisation cluster with the grey being none virtualised 10gb servers - the 4 grey cat5 in the bottom sled of the m6100 are 1gb links for managment of part our Virtualization cluster servers

 

Orange and yellow are our web & BYOD traffic

 

I'll take another shot when I'm back in work next week.
