Question on Tyres - My back tyre isn't looking great. Although there's a lot of tread round the sides, the centre is getting close to the wear bar and there's lots of little nicks all over the centre of the tyre. I've also 2 screws stuck in the tyre that luckily went sideways so just want into the side of the tread. Thinking I should change these before Winter arrives. I've got a quote for £300 for a new set of Michelin Pilot Road 4's (front and back). Does anyone have opinions on when you should change them and preferred brands?

I've always been a Bridgestone chap - BT45 and then the 0XX series. Currently running the VFR on 023 GT... The dual compound has always worked well for me. I've ridden other people's bikes with Pilot series on them and I've been impressed by their grip in all kinds of conditions, but those same people have also expressed disappointment at the wear rate... The road is better than the sport by some margin for wear.

 

If you like the Michelin it would be worth seeing if the pilot power is available for your wheel sizes as they might be better value. Depends what kind of riding you're doing though as the pilot road are better in the wet.

 

(I had a long term loan of a friends Guzzi Daytona 1100 while he was out of the country and I shredded a Pilot Sport almost to the canvas in a weekend... But that bike was a bit special and packed 130hp and nearly 120nm torque)

 

LeEdit - You should definitely change those. As soon as they are starting to get close the wear bars it's time but when you add in the screws, it absolutely time!

I've had pr4's on my previous bike and I was very impressed with both their grip and wear rate, both were very good

Always worth shopping around, especially if you know a decent fitter! When I was living up in Colchester I knew the mechanic at one of the dealers, he would just let me do my own tyres on their equipment
