Printing when connected via Remote Desktop Services

Hi

 

I have a 2012 RD Gateway which connects to a 2008 R2 RDS. I have printer redirect allowed, so the idea being that a teacher can connect to the RDS from home and print out at home; but its not working.

 

I have installed the printer driver on the server in case it was that.

 

Does anyone know why a normal domain user doesn't have a redirected printer when they login from home?

Have you checked the settings on the remote connection. I think under options the home user can tick printers, clipboard and so on....

The user logs into the website and clicks on a pre made RDP icon, which connects them to the server using SSL. You can add extra commands so when the server generates the file it adds them.

 

I suppose I could save a normal RDP file and see what the commands are for printers?!

I know what you mean, but the end user does not get that when they logon to the Remote Desktop Web Services.

Unfortunately we don't have RDS in our setup, however I would check the following as they seem to tie in with your issue...

I used the 2008r2 version and I believe you need to install the actual printer, not just the driver.

Doesnt Terminal Services / RDP have native printing drivers ? Aslong as the driver is there you will be able to print to a local printer.

It should use the Easy Print drivers when using it, failing that to install the driver on to the server. I have done that to no avail.

 

I am wondering more if its a permission issue with the server side of things.

Is the GPO to use the Easy Print Driver first set?

Are the environment tab options in AD populated? Also saw that you said normal domain user...does this work for Admins?

Environment tab? ERM dunno. And yeah I have noticed it works for Admins, but not tested the RDS setup tho

I would check the environment tab on in Active Directory Users and Computers on a DC and ensure the print options are selected for the user in question. if you are using RSAT and can't see this tab... Windows 7 RSAT: Multiple tabs are missing when viewing user properties in Active Directory Users and Computers

Is the RDS on a Domain Controller? Is there only one user with this problem? It would be great to test out RDS with an admin user as then we can narrow it down

Nope it is not a DC and its for a few people. I will check an admin at some point over the weekend

When I connect from home and have a random printer installed (ie different from anywhere) then the server installs the printer onto the RDS Server.

 

Does anyone know how to allow a Domain User Group to add printers?

Besides the settings in your RDP file ref printers

 

create a GPO

Computer\Policies\Administrative Templates\Printers\Point and print Restrictions ENABLED

 

That should let the users install drivers

 

Also do you use a gateway server? might be worth checking that you have no connection policies blocking device redirection
