Hi

 

I am looking to implement 13 PCs that will dual boot to different existing VLANs. At the moment they are on the "Guest VLAN" which is separate from our network entirely, but we would like the option to use these on our school network as well.

 

I have looked at the on-board NICs and even though they "say" they support VLAN Tagging, I cannot get it to work; regardless of what drivers I use.

 

I was thinking about buying some Intel Desktop CTs to put in them, but as £20 each it will be expensive.

 

 

Before I buy them, does anyone have any experience with VLAN Tagging and Dual Booting?

 

The switch they are plugged into (has recently been changed) and is now a HP Procurve 2530 24G PoE Switch.

Not something I've ever done, seems quite a specialist requirement. But I concur with your idea of getting Intel NICs - although £20 each may be a lot to start out with, that's particularly cheap for Intel cards so it's worth a go, and if all else fails you've still got some handy spares (great for when onboards fail or get flaky; yes Realtek, looking at you!)

 

Should work just fine, it's a driver thing so on a dualboot setup the driver in one OS will use whatever VLAN is configured on that, and ditto for the other OS. You just need to make sure that on the switch, the ports are untagged for your default VLAN and tagged for the guest, and tagged for the normal network.

I've used VLAN tagging on an Intel card whilst I was doing my Cisco CCENT with windows you go to device manager, and the properties of the card you set the vlans there, it creates virtual nics and you configure them as normal.

Don't forget if you are tagging the VLANS on the pc you'll need the ports on the switch to use tagging / trunking too.

I have done it on my HyperV Host and it works as expected, although it sets it through the host rather than the client.

 

I will order the Intel ones and hopefully it should be ok :)
