Oddly nostalgic and saddened by this, even though I haven't used ClipArt in years and years (which is the point, I guess). But so many hours of my early years were spent trawling the gallery of never-quite-right images that just seeing the screen cap in the article gave me a little shiver.

Microsoft axes Clip Art image library for Bing Image Search - Software - News - HEXUS.net

Microsoft's Office team has announced that it is axing the Office.com Clip Art online image library. Users will begin to be directed to a new image source; Bing Image Search. "The Office.com Clip Art and image library has closed shop," the Microsoft's Office blog said. "Usage of Office's image library has been declining year-to-year as customers rely more on search engines."

So we'll see more letters from getty being sent out then.

Ben

FTA:

Bing Image Search, as built into Office, uses a copyright Creative Commons filter that's switched on by default to allow for commercial use.

But that's irrelevant as everyone uses Google Image Search with no consideration for the 350-year old concept of "copyright"

That was my first thought too - surely, unless Microsoft are using a specialized version of Bing that only search CC/public domain images for this, Getty and others will have a damn good case for rather a large settlement from Microsoft for encouraging/aiding piracy...

EDIT: @sonofsanta did the smart thing and looked at the facts :)

Just had a concerned email from one of our office staff as to the content of a ClipArt search...

It would seem that Bing Image Search is not a flawless replacement for the original curated selection of images :tsk:
