We cant block them either thats done by the council and they will only add porn sites for you.

 

NickJones: We know what they are using it for, myspace, facebook (which is banned in the AUP and blocked by the council). Just parents dont take my word and need proof.

 

setup your own proxy? then you can ban what ever you see not fit for the kids

It might be worth asking your LEA if they are a Becta Accredited ISP, which involves automated web filtering tests being done in a sample of schools. To be honest, if they aren't blocking proxy-avoidance sites I think the answer will be "no"!

 

They really need to sort out their filtering and their lack of accreditation could be ammo for you with SLT etc.

they did a presentation at a bgfl thing not so long ago an i had looked at there stuff before, after that they gave me a trial so i could install it on my server and i think it allowed 15 client installs

and i played with it for a while and brought it, cost depends if your primary or secondary

primary cost ent too bad but i think secondary in comparison is a bit over the top, the LEA were negotiating a discount which i was promised to get back the difference which is something i should check up on now i think of it

 

i will say one thing tho the ammount of false positives sometimes makes going through logs teedious and time consuming, if you know the keywords you want to look for or the users there is alot of filtering in the violation reports bit that can help but if you want to look through every "violation" then expect a fare few false positives,

perhapse there is a way to lessen these but i have nto yet investigated that

coupel of other features i liked:

you can have different categories for different OU's and setup customised logins for staff to access the database of violations

I agree with Master about the software, a LOT of false positive. I was advised to add words to the ignore list but some of them are words worth monitoring, just the amount of irellevant catches.

Speaking of BECTA... we have our certificate now, so you can now BECTA-ify your filtering without buying websense!!

That is daft. How much is the Securus software?

 

Not sure about for a larger school, but for about 150 stations we're paying just short of £700 for licenses. They get cheaper if you've got more stations.

 

That, of course, is on top of the initial cost of the hardware which has run into a few thousand for us.

 

Excellent piece of kit though, just a few minor problems that still need hammering out to do with the box itself crashing every now and then.
