Screen shot web monitoring

Hi,

 

I was wondering if there was something which if a student went on a specific website say http://www.surfpros.com could the pages they go on have a screen dump taken and saved somewhere.

 

We only have the ablility to say that they have been on the proxy as the web address logged is jargen (as its how the proxy works http://www.surfpros.com/load_of_gibberish) but we need to get evidence they have been on myspace through it and the screen dump thing would be ideal.

You can decrypt the 'load_of_gibberish' by running it through (normally) a BASE64 decoder

Most VNC software will allow you to take screenshots if you like.

Securus does this. It'll take a snapshot of any violation, and you can enter your own 'bad' words for it to pick up on

I wasn't sure if it was deliberate! I'd actually love to be able to install a Securus box but they're far too expensive to justify...

Does your AUP say anything about not attempting to hack/bypass school security? Of course, the Computer Misuse Act does even if your AUP doesn't, but that's possibly going in a little heavy-handed!

 

I take it the assumption that they're obviously up to no good, otherwise they would do it normally and allow you to log it isn't acceptable?

 

I suppose, they might actually be on sites they are okay to you, they're just civil liberties fans who don't want you to see what they're doing :-)

I dont know, I just know our school will only take the free blocking provided by the council. Is there no free program that could do it? Id do it myself if I could program, shame I cant.

How about looking at their MySpace profiles and seeing the times on their comments?

 

Just to play devil's advocate for a moment, how do you know they are using it for MySpace if you don't currently have any proof which you can give to the parents?

use censornet to block. we use it. its limited but fairly easy to setup and use....

I know because I have seen it on their screens when I walk in the room and remotly in RM Tutor. But I cant sit doing that all day.

We have something called Policy Central by a company called Forensic Software, I believe there's a guy from them on here somewhere.

 

Basically it will screenshot whenever someone opens/types any document inluding webpages that have a banned word.

 

It has prebuilt dictionaries but you can add your own or exclude ones too.

I think we were quoted about £6500 over three years...

 

We're in the same position and trying to sort out a way to stick our own proxy between two LEA managed switches

If I was in your situation I would get in touch with them and see why exactly it is that they're not blocking proxy websites.

They do some but there are so many of them. Shame its just a URL filter and is not content bassed

You can get alot of free systems to control what users can access, have a quick search on the forums.

I'm currently using IPCop with the URLFilter addon- Does the job, but its only URL filtering. Tom was kind enough to send me an evaluation of their SmoothGuardian- its a beast of an app, but thats also money!

 

Securus is fairly hefty price + annual subscription, but it's good for having a log of violations.
