Im often asked to put some tracks onto CD for a school play the nippers are doing, but very likely they dont want the whole track .. just 2 minutes from the middle of it etc.

Anyone know any Windows software that will allow me to load up a few tracks and specify start and end points of a track ?

Edit: I should add that, ideally, I'm looking for a way out of editing and cropping every track they want. Something that will allow me to simply open the whole track and select just a part of it to play.

Audacity (free and open source) will let you edit audio tracks quickly and easily.

I looked at that. Audacity opens a new window for every track, which is a shame. Would be nice if it didn't! Dragging multiple tracks to the same window plays from the same start point on all tracks :(

If it's any help, when I set up audio tracks for plays and so forth I generally import the original track into Audacity, trim off any bits we don't want and level the volume level to a standard level - if you just select the whole track and choose "Amplify" from the effects menu it will pick a default amount that puts the volume of the whole track up to the maximum it will go to without distorting any part of it. Then I export the track, either as a WAV or MP3. For playback, I have all the tracks in a folder, numbered and sorted so they are all in cue order, then have a Windows Media Player window open as small as it will go. Simply double-clicking on the appropriate audio file plays it instantly - it helps if you have a machine with an SSD.
