ChrisH Posted June 29, 2005 Posted June 29, 2005 Ok this has been mentioned in a diffferent thread and was off topic so I though I would bring it i here. I have mentioned these to the Head of IT and he seems quiete keen and is going to ask the head about having some. We suffer from a lot of damage in our rooms so just having these cameras to see who has been in would be great. Dlink DCS-2100+ have been mentioned, has anyone got any up and running they would like to recommend? I would be interested to know how your powering them POE (if possible)? We are writing our AUP at the moment so will make sure this is in there. Cheers Chris
Geoff Posted June 29, 2005 Posted June 29, 2005 Nothing can touch the AXIS network cameras. http://www.axis.com/products/video/camera/index.htm You can pick them up on dabs.com fairly cheaply.
Dos_Box Posted June 29, 2005 Posted June 29, 2005 Agreed. Heres te view from my office (in real time!). http://212.219.83.214/view/index.shtml We have an Axis 211. Very nice it is too.
browolf Posted June 29, 2005 Posted June 29, 2005 you can find other cameras in google with these expressions: Axis Video Server (CAM) inurl:indexFrame.shtml Axis AXIS Video Live Camera intitle:"Live View / - AXIS" AXIS Video Live View intitle:"Live View / - AXIS" | inurl:view/view.sht AXIS 200 Network Camera intitle:"The AXIS 200 Home Page" Canon Network Camera intitle:liveapplet inurl:LvAppl Mobotix Network Camera intext:"MOBOTIX M1" intext:"Open Menu" Panasonic Network Camera intitle:"WJ-NT104 Main Page" Panasonic Network Camera inurl:"ViewerFrame?Mode=" Sony Network Camera SNC-RZ30 HOME Seyeon FlexWATCH Camera intitle:flexwatch intext:"Home page ver" Sony Network Camera intitle:snc-z20 inurl:home/ webcamXP "powered by webcamXP" "Pro|Broadcast" Canon ImageReady intitle:"remote ui:top page"
Ric_ Posted June 29, 2005 Posted June 29, 2005 I intend to put an Axis 205 camera in my new server room. As for PoE, I know that D-Link make power injectors that can be used when a non-PoE switch is being used but I'm not sure if these work with non-D-Link products.
tarquel Posted June 29, 2005 Posted June 29, 2005 Damn Chris - you beat me to it lol I was gonna go one step further and ask if anyone knows a good network / IP cctv camera system to self-install thats easy to set up. Let me explain a little further... We had a CCTV system installed 4-ish months ago and its ....well.... crap lol Its a manually cabled point-to-point affair - not IP or anything - just power & video cables run everywhere, but to add another, you can piggyback the power but not the video cable (whats the point of that lol). The cables terminate on a BNC-styled port (if which there are 16 in and out ones) and the machine has two HDD's in it - not mirrored, but for additional storage. I think the res of the pictures is about 720 x ?? and its pretty crap as the cameras they used ared day/night ones so we gonna get flood lights everywhere. They start to get all misty as it gets darker - yuck! The unit has a web interface that can be viewed on a lan (or i'net/vpn perhaps) but its the slowest thing I've ever seen. The interface is only a 10M, not a 10/100, and it displays stuff soo slowly (from a machine on the same switch even) that its jut unusable properly in that way. Right, is there a unit - like this, but actually good that we can get/setup and install some std Cat5 networking to a few choice areas and put up some WAP's and setup some WiFi IP/Network Cameras? If your wondering why a seperate network, its because the network isnt the quickest as it is, and having it any slower would be baaaad news for me. Also, as a side point, can a (IP) telephone system be intregated into this later? Dunno why I'm bothered about it lol Just cant help of how to get this place out of the bin (as such) lol Then maybe I'll have a phone in my room (after long last) and be able to CCTV the computer rooms like you are after Chris Cheers Nath PS I saw a cool program I-Catcher or something similar that we tried out with some really cheap creative webcams (before we got the CCTV up and running). I guess a similar thing could be setup (this program was a trial ver naturally so didnt get a chance to play properly with it)
ChrisH Posted June 29, 2005 Author Posted June 29, 2005 I have got several DLINK POE adaptors in ready for distributing over the summer with the APs. I dont see any reason why they wont work with other stuff depending on the power needs. There are different models though with different ouptputs by the look of it.

tarquel Posted June 29, 2005 Posted June 29, 2005 any thought to my above post? .....anyone? lol Nath.
ninjabeaver Posted June 30, 2005 Posted June 30, 2005 any thought to my above post? .....anyone? lol Nath. I've got 3 D-Link 2100+ in the school at the moment, with 2 more on order. I think they are superb. Easy to setup, view and listen over IP, full colour, auto correcting etc etc etc. Well worth the £150. Ok this has been mentioned in a diffferent thread and was off topic so I though I would bring it i here. They've saved me a small fortune in repairs due to vandalism. These last two cameras should cover the rooms that get very little damage. It's also good at capturing other bits. The cameras picked up a fight in the back of a classroom which the teacher managed to miss. 8O . The girl involved got suspended.

RobC Posted June 30, 2005 Posted June 30, 2005 Also, as a side point, can a (IP) telephone system be intregated into this later? You can run an IP phone system on a data network, but you will ideally need switches capable of QoS (Quality of Service) to make sure that no packets are dropped or delayed. We've got a fully IP-based phone system running on our school network based on Avaya equipment. As for cameras, I've basically said that for our new school building (in 2008, hopefully) we must have proper IP security cameras as at the moment we use an Astraguard system which uses old full length ISA cards (remember them...? ) to receive the signal from dedicated cabling (BNC terminators). The software is DOS based & running on P2 systems, which fall over VERY regularly!
ChrisH Posted June 30, 2005 Author Posted June 30, 2005 http://www.fishermore.lancs.sch.uk/images/dlinkpoe1.png This is the POE setup I have. The small grey box sits in the cabinet with the power brick. The blue cable would be the cable running through the building carrying data and power terminating at the bigger grey box, which then splits it for the AP. The only complaint I have is there is no provision to wall mount terminal unit so I got tech to fabricate me something to hold them on the wall.
tarquel Posted June 30, 2005 Posted June 30, 2005 er....nice You're just using powered hubs then or something similar right? I know I'll kick meself but I cant remember what POE stands for lol I understand what you have there but what controls & records all the camera? thats what I was trying to ask in this post (http://www.edugeek.net/index.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=1219#1219) above. Cheers, Nath
tarquel Posted June 30, 2005 Posted June 30, 2005 ahhhh POE....expensive? You got another piccy to show me? I shall re-scrutinise (if thats a word) the photo later (I can be a bit of a thicko sometimes lol) Cheers Nath
ChrisH Posted June 30, 2005 Author Posted June 30, 2005 Those cost me £25 a set. You may need a higher model though depending on what the cameras power needs are. I was trying to figure it out yesterday but got distracted If theres anything in particular you want to see I will take a photo it is just set up on my workbench at the mo.
tarquel Posted June 30, 2005 Posted June 30, 2005 Just a bit more detail of the items really - models & pricing wud be handy too. Plus the software/system used to record the cameras too wud be handy. Whats the quality like on the cameras you got and are they day/night type of cameras? Cheers, Nath
Geoff Posted June 30, 2005 Posted June 30, 2005 AXIS do outdoor day/night cameras. The cheapest one is a couple of models up from the one Chris linked to at Woodlands. The quality is comparable though. http://www.axis.com/products/cam_221/index.htm In 'night mode' it uses low band IR to produce a black and white image. In the unlikely event you get poor images at night you can use an IR lamp to help the camera 'see' better. http://www.axis.com/products/cam_irillum/index.htm As for actually recording the video output, AXIS do a network video recorder. http://www.axis.com/products/cam_262/index.htm
ChrisH Posted June 30, 2005 Author Posted June 30, 2005 Ah right Tarquel we dont have any cameras yet I was just showing an example of POE used to power a networked device .
tarquel Posted June 30, 2005 Posted June 30, 2005 I see (soz. got a bit confused earlier lol) Thanks for the info Nath
neilenormal Posted July 19, 2005 Posted July 19, 2005 We have 9 Axis cameras around the school, none on POE, all powered from mains. We use the Axis camera software which you buy separately and used an old Bromcom server reconditioned to be the camera server. It just records the last three days. All are set as motion detect, but the birds and the litter set them off!!!! Its not really a good enough system for identifying people but does act as a deterrent. Neilenormal
Westbrooke Posted October 7, 2005 Posted October 7, 2005 Agree with everyone else on Axis cameras. For recording, there is the Axis software, or the next step is systems from Milestone or Lenel. I've just put in a multi camera system with cameras indoors and out with 3 week recording using the Lenel system, but that was picked as I was also doing access control (proximity cards) for 20+ doors. The Axis system is probably your best choice - separate modules for viewing and recording. If you are border, make one of the cameras PTZ (Pan, Tilt, Zoom) so you can control it remotely! POE is simplest - you always want cameras where it is difficult to get power. If your switches are not PoE, then an injector is fine. As for other thing you can do with your network, the sky's the limit. VoIP is simple (but requires a quality network), access control for doors, control of lights, electric blinds and screens...
kingswood Posted October 7, 2005 Posted October 7, 2005 ..large plasma screens for reception areas...yeah, rings a bell that :-) Paul
projector1 Posted March 9, 2007 Posted March 9, 2007 win a axis camera http://www.axis.com/products/video/contest/index.htm
