talksr Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 Hi, it was recently suggested to me on this forum that Gen8 servers from HP may be suitable for purchase at my school. I work at another school who are also looking to invest in a server to take care of Sophos, WSUS and act as a DC. Can anyone tell me if either the DL320e Gen8 V2 or V3 will fit in a standard network cab (one which can accommodate switches and is no deeper than a switch)? I know that many HP rack mount servers are really deep and they would not fit in the smaller cabs the school has. Any advice would be really appreciated.

DevilsAdvocate is indeed right, Dimensions (W x D x H) 43.5 x 38.3 x 4.3 cm, you've then got maybe another couple of inches depth to allow for the power lead etc. If you've got a spec in mind drop me a PM and I'll get over some smaller form factor options. Ahaha, I thought that there was one which would fit. This is the one for me. A standard rack is 1070mm deep in my experience. A comms rack is not a standard rack. Question for you, how come you are wanting to mount a server in a comms rack? Simple reason is we already have a huge HPX1600 G2. We have no server cabs anywhere, and no room for them, only wall mounted coms cabs. I am not keen on having servers dotted around in unsecured areas around the school. If I can at least get one in a locked cab, I will sleep easier at night.

john Posted November 19, 2014 Posted November 19, 2014 If the cab you are looking at put it in is on a wall check its actually secured correctly, I'm sure I recall @Gatt having fun with a cab starting to come from a wall with servers on top of it or something along those lines many moons ago

The one I am looking at would actually fit into the coms cab.

You mentioned in the OP that this was going to be a DC and host Sophos and WSUS? I would definitely consider more than 8GB of RAM, and virtualise these three different roles. 1

This machine will be capable of VM'ing with more RAM.... Oh and get a tower.... You need a proper rack. Those HP's are pretty HEAVY. - - - Updated - - - LOL. What happens if I pull this string ???

In an ideal world, I would get a larger sized one, but the school simply doesn't have the space to house one and based on it's troubled past with staff unplugging servers to charge their mobile phones, I want this in a cab at any cost. We have a deeper than usual comms cab, so this HP should fit in very nicely. I have taken on board your comments re virtualisation and more ram. How much ram would you recommend? Double? Also, which Virtualisation software would you recommend? I have used HyperV before? My only other concern is I must have two NICs which are fully working as the school has two separate networks, and I require two nics to connect to both. Presumably, this would not be a problem with virtualisation.

Hyper-V, unless you have a strong preference for something else and have the money to buy support/feature licenses. I think 16GB would be OK. Perhaps have the base installation run Hyper-V and nothing else. Then have a VM for each of the three roles, each with 4GB. Presumably, this would not be a problem with virtualisation. Can't really comment on this without knowing more about it. Why do you have two separate networks? Would it be easier to combine them?
