I have 30 2007 iMacs in my classroom. For years I used a free program to enable and disable the system speakers, while allowing the headphone jack.

After upgrading to Snow Leopard and Yosemite, the program no longer works and the author has moved on to other projects.

Does anyone have any solutions for a quiet lab?

Thanks in advance

It's possible to do this through Apple remote desktop and the plugins for Automator.

I have made one, which I can send to you, it links in with Apple Remote Desktop so you could just choose the macs you want to mute.

in ARD you can send (as a UNIX command):

osascript -e "set volume 0"

Not a very elegant solution but one to save in the sidebar of Remote Desktop as a shell script if you want to quickly mute the room!
