Seems the hardcore Christian right wing are now anti-apple. As a side note, probably won't be long until the Samsung CEO announces he is gayer, and water resistant as well.

One of the anandtech and CNET senior mods said about how they'll boycott Apple until he steps down, along with hundreds of others saying they support him or will boycott also. Its causing a rife debate and the mods are having fun cleaning up...But in short order the threads and users have been deleted and banned because of outright homophobic attitudes which aren't tolerated. 2

Also he hid it because he wasn't sure he would get the place if it was known prior to his appointment.

The CEO of one of the most wealthy/valuable companies in the world has felt it necessary to release a statement about his sexuality - including explaining why he has done so. The explanation in his statement seems worthy to me, so as he is an influential person various media sources have picked up the story and started sharing and commenting on his statement. Certainly seems more newsworthy to me than some phone being launched. It opens the floor for other CEOs to come out when the CEO of the worlds largest (and most valuable) company comes out as gay. Also he hid it because he wasn't sure he would get the place if it was known prior to his appointment. Actually he didn't hide it as such, it seems that it was pretty much an open secret - at least within Apple and among those who knew him personally. This is more of an open statement of support, hoping to give people who might not be in such a fortunate position as him a metaphorical helping hand. Edited October 31, 2014 by jamesb

I've seen a lot of people saying that it's not a big thing, and shouldn't be a story because it isn't particularly remarkable. But it is remarkable, and it is noteworthy, otherwise it wouldn't be drumming up so much discussion. Normally if someone doesn't think a story is newsworthy they'll sigh and turn to the next one, however in this case they're engaging with the story - purely to register dislike of it. That says something about it at the very least. And I have been waiting for a bent iPhone joke to pop up since this morning. Can we now agree it's been made and move on?

It's odd that people will boycott Apple products because of the sexuality of its CEO but not because of its terrible environmental record or the high suicide rates in the Chinese factories that make it's overpriced kit.

The whole issue around the things we buy and where they are made is probably something we all need to think about more but not in this thread!

I really had thought we had got past it tbh but clearly not! Maybe it's just because news editors have such a short attention span these days. From being the crisis of the century (particularly in the US) over the last few weeks, Ebola has slipped down the pecking order for lots of news organisations. Or maybe it's us punters that have the short attention spans!

Even if its "kinda known about", I think some parts of western society still prefers its gays the way they used to prefer women and ethnic minorities: Unseen, unheard and preferably at the back of the bus without a voice. One day the media and some of its readers will mature enough to consider the 'news' that x's CEO is gay or y's CEO is a woman to be about as newsworthy as whether they're left or right handed.
