I have an ActivBoard 300

Product code. Abv387s300

Serial#. C1005140692

attached to a laptop.

I need to position the laptop about 30' from the board and am looking to buy a USB extension cable:

http://www.amazon.com/Plugable-Meter-Active-Extension-Female/dp/B004AGX4YO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1414090301&sr=8-1&keywords=usb+30ft

Which says that some of the 400mA is used up by the repeater in the extension cable - so before purchasing - I wanted to know how much power the board needs?

thx!

I don't see any spot on it for a power plug/adapter.

Also - I plugged the laptop I via just the USB cable and it seemed to work fine.

I don't know for sure on your model, but the power to our's piggybacks through the serial cable even if you use the interaction through the USB. I had the same thought you had, that it should work just through a USB connection, but I'm afraid it won't. It's an odd setup, but that's the way it is.

I've used usb leads which have 2 plugs (at computer end) down to 1 socket on a run

how long have the cables been that you've used?

To clarify it works via the USB alone (I don't see any other cables anyway) -so it is being powered by USB alone- my Q is that I want to get a long USB extension cable - and need to know if a 30 foot cord will work (i.e. how much power does the board need). OR if someone an send a link to a 30ft cord that they use

thx

Promethean boards are not USB powered. They are powered by an external power adaptor.

Not all of them anymore.

There were some "new" models around that only needed usb to power them including the inbuilt amplifier although looking at the current specs for 300 and 500 series boards they've gone for an 18v power supply.

Hi All,

To clear this up:

The board that cgott42 has mentioned (AbV387S300) is an entry level 300 series board, this board does not contain an amplifier, speakers or PSU and interactivity is solely powered via USB.

There is a PSU that can be purchased for this board (to allow wireless connectivity) which co-incidentally would be the best solution; as well as an amplifier and speaker upgrade.

The 300PRO boards already include the Amplifier, speakers and a PSU - However these boards can be interactive without the need for the PSU, as interactivity is powered via USB, you will simply not get any audio if you do not have the power connected or the amplifier turned off.

The 500PRO boards already include the Amplifier, speakers and a PSU - However these boards need to have BOTH USB and PSU connected and active in order to be interactive.

If you are set on using a extended cabling setup Promethean's stance and advice for computers that are placed further away than the supplied cabling cabling is documented on our KB: PrometheanKB (articles 10414, and 10440).

Thank you

Hi cgott42,

I'm not sure what to link to to be honest :o)

The Wireless connectivity upgrade can be purchased by contacting your reseller, or Promethean direct (in the US), you need to ask about the "Wireless upgrade for a 300 Standard board".

The cable that Promethean have tested and knows works is the Cables2Go part number 29341 (www.cables2go.com) this was tested a number of years ago.

However Cables2Go recommend part number: 29338, which Promethean have not tested.

It is your choice ultimately which route and which cable to purcahse and use.

The support for these third party cables lies with Cables2Go and not Promethean.

Thank you
