StevieM Posted October 23, 2014 Posted October 23, 2014 I know! I'm starting to worry myself a little.
mikecain Posted October 23, 2014 Posted October 23, 2014 I think i must of just had a moment of madness, just ordered the Beta of Elite Dangerous, and a Saitek Pro Flight X-55 Rhino H.O.T.A.S. (Hands on Throttle and Stick) from CPC. Our lass will hit the roof
ZeroHour Posted October 23, 2014 Posted October 23, 2014 Just a heads up for those of you using nvidia, todays driver update contains Elite fixes!
thepridster Posted October 24, 2014 Posted October 24, 2014 wow I didn't even know elite were going to make a new game I remember playing elite 2 when I was so very young will have to get this... I still have it lying around somewhere next to street wars ah the god old games
StevieM Posted October 24, 2014 Posted October 24, 2014 What a palaver! Tried to download the beta yesterday, but the shop was 'being updated'. Managed to access it later in the evening when it was back online, though. I click to launch the program and get a message saying that I need to install .NET 3.5 - only it can't connect (possibly due to updates being managed by WSUS). Try to enable it through control panel, but have the same problem. Spend AGES searching for solutions to the problem and end up having to download the entire Window 8.1 Enterprise installation media from VLSC, mounting the iso, and enabling it through DISM at command prompt. So, now I can launch the program... only when I log in, it asks me to enter a verification code it has sent by email, which took over an hour to arrive! I finally got access to the game at half-past midnight, but by this time I was about to collapse from nervous exhaustion so I shut down the machine and went to bed. And I thought it used to take ages to load the original Elite from a tape!
JackCPickup Posted October 24, 2014 Posted October 24, 2014 I burned to death twice by going too close to a star...but it was still more fun than your night I think! haha
ZeroHour Posted October 25, 2014 Posted October 25, 2014 Beta 3 is coming out tomorrow all! Expect it in the late evening though if it does land.
StevieM Posted October 25, 2014 Posted October 25, 2014 Finally managed to have a go this afternoon. Finding it really difficult but I'm sure I'll get better once I've figured out how the controls work. There must be a flight manual somewhere!
DMcGuigan Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 I'm shopping for a stick now, not only for Elite: Dangerous (which I'll probably pick up this month) , but also for: X-Wing and TIE Fighter GoG Goodness
StevieM Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 Still working my way through the tutorials and training missions. I've managed to destroy the sidewinder twice out of about 50 tries, and got the Cobra down to 1% before getting blown away for the umpteenth time! It'll be months before I'm good enough to play the actual game at this rate. That said, it looks and sounds great hooked up to my 42" TV and 7.1 surround AV receiver!
thepridster Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 oh god I need it next payday is too far away..... so on the rundown of joysticks as anyone got a recommendation? not looking to spend a lot on one!
ICTDirect_Dave Posted October 28, 2014 Author Posted October 28, 2014 oh god I need it next payday is too far away..... so on the rundown of joysticks as anyone got a recommendation? not looking to spend a lot on one! The Thrustmaster that ZH suggested looks to be a superb budget buy Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X Joystick (PC/PS3): Amazon.co.uk: PC & Video Games
thepridster Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 wow that does look good for the price was looking at the Saitek stuff and it looks amazing but the pricetag....
ICTDirect_Dave Posted October 28, 2014 Author Posted October 28, 2014 Yeah, the joy of the Saitek stuff though is that you can postition the stick and throttle for best comfort, that's always useful
StevieM Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 You can save a quid or so on the Thrustmaster here - Thrustmaster T-flight Hotas X Joystick - 4160543 - CCL Computers I paid £34.98 including delivery and it arrived within 48 hours.
DMcGuigan Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 I just got back from PC world, got a F.L.Y 5.. wanted a full X-5X HOTAS setup, but figured I'd go a bit cheaper.
ZeroHour Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 Beta 3 is coming out tomorrow all! Expect it in the late evening though if it does land. Derp Beta 3 is supposed to drop late tonight I think. Some info about beta 3: Elite: Dangerous' Beta 3 to include B class star, gas giants | IncGamers.com
DMcGuigan Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 Right, FLY 5's hooked up, Beta 3's downloaded.. time to find out how badly I suck at this thing! LEEEEEEEEEROOO- wait, wrong game
StevieM Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 time to find out how badly I suck at this thing! Bet you I can beat you in those stakes. I'm starting to remember why it is I don't play computer games! Now the autist in me is telling me that I need to complete each of the tutorials and training missions in order before I can move on to the game proper, but I'm just getting so bored of being blown up by that Cobra in training mission 2, that I'm just going to have a go in single player mode and try to avoid getting into any fights.
ICTDirect_Dave Posted October 29, 2014 Author Posted October 29, 2014 Bet you I can beat you in those stakes. I'm starting to remember why it is I don't play computer games! All well and good until some Pirate so & so interdicts you on a trade route. If you're having trouble flying and managing all the other controls why not try Voice Attack? You can program in every extra command as a voice trigger leaving you to focus purely on keeping the target in your sights.
DMcGuigan Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 I had to try a good 5/6 times before I could do the 1v1, think it's training mission 6. I'm not moving on to the next one until I can reliably win that one
StevieM Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 All well and good until some Pirate so & so interdicts you on a trade route. Decided to go into open play, just to see what happens. Been interdicted a couple of times when I was just about to come out of super-cruise and thrown way back, but no-one has attacked me...yet! I can just go back to the last save point if I get blown up though, right? If you're having trouble flying and managing all the other controls why not try Voice Attack? What I'm having trouble with is shooting at a fast-moving target! The only controls I'm using then are pitch, roll, thrust and fire! Should I be doing something else too? You can program in every extra command as a voice trigger leaving you to focus purely on keeping the target in your sights. Now THAT is impressive. I'll borrow one of the broken cheap mics from school and give it a go. I had to try a good 5/6 times before I could do the 1v1, think it's training mission 6. I'm not moving on to the next one until I can reliably win that one 5 or 6??!! I tried at least 50 or 60 times before I managed to destroy the Sidewinder. If I followed your example, it really would the year 3300 before I got to play the game properly! That said, I did manage, finally, to destroy the Cobra in the wolf attack scenario at silly o'clock this morning.
ZeroHour Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 I am starting to think we need a forum for this
