i agree..i shouldn't be laughing. But fear not the CD's were password protected and we all know how unbreakable excel passwords are

It actually looks like the cd's were NOT encrypted at all.

Ours gets the unencrypted ftp treatment to county :? They can't get their head around sftp

but seriously this happens all the time in Department of Work and Pensions - they send unencrypted disks of all benefit claimants to borough councils to update the local databases. cd updates get sent once per month IIRC.

I know someone who works for the DWP and they have said that on average that a disk of data is lost every 2 months around the country.

You think thats bad, a Big Blue company has the contract for one of the big banks to deal with all sales transactions and that information is sent over the internet in clear text 8O , they think thats fine though. I know because my friend works for this big blue company.

We once found blowing down the street computer printouts that detailed the credit/finance details of customers buying cars on HP from one of the local major car dealers - about 2000 names in all. I went cold when I picked it up and saw what it was.

I was waiting for the torrent to come up! Better still have seeders when I get home!

As for the 'office junior' Thats just a lame attempt at scapegoating from the upper echelons. Said junior wouldn't have sent that data if there wasn't some order from up above to have said data sent...

Some government officials should go through a trial of breaching the data protection act 25 million times if you ask me.

He lives where I live! LOL!

@ Mattx - You know we're onto Heroes S02E09 now! I watched the first series in a weekend and the first five episodes I a couple of evenings a few weeks ago.

Not as good as the first series...
