Java 8 Update 25 - Silent Install via SCCM

Anyone seeing this error in their logs?

Error 1722. There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor. Action installexe, location: C:\Windows\Installer\MSI8CC9.tmp, command: /s INSTALLDIR="C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.8.0_25\\" WEB_JAVA=1 WEB_JAVA_SECURITY_LEVEL=H WEB_ANALYTICS=0 EULA=0 NOSTARTMENU=1 AUTO_UPDATE=0 SPONSORS=0 REPAIRMODE=0

Yep. Just started seeing this on my first test machine of the day. Here are the steps I took - I should mention that most of our machines have 7U67 already installed, and I have supersedence set to "UNINSTALL" that version during the deployment:

1) Verify that target machine has 7U67: "Java 7 Update 67|{26A24AE4-039D-4CA4-87B4-2F03217067FF}"

2) Deploy Java 8U25 to device: OK

3) Launch install from Software Center: OK

4) Installation fails, "The software change returned error code 0x643(1603)."

5) Check MSI Installation Log: "MSI (s) (38:0C) [10:19:41:437]: Product: Java 8 Update 25 -- Error 1722. There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor. Action installexe, location: C:\WINDOWS\Installer\MSI3525.tmp, command: /s INSTALLDIR="C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre1.8.0_25\\" WEB_JAVA=1 WEB_JAVA_SECURITY_LEVEL=H WEB_ANALYTICS=0 EULA=0 NOSTARTMENU=1 AUTO_UPDATE=0 SPONSORS=0 REPAIRMODE=0 "

6) Reboot machine: OK

7) Retry installation from Software Center: Failed, same errors

8) Check installed Java version: "Java 8 Update 25|{26A24AE4-039D-4CA4-87B4-2F83218025F0}" (So...it installed, but it didn't? 0_o)

9) Check Java version at Java.com and JavaTester.org: Tests fail

10) Disable anti-virus, retry installation: Install failed

11) Run command manually: Install failed.

12) Create alternate deployment without supersedence: OK

13) Install alternate deployment: Failed. (same errors)

Still doing some research/testing, but that's what I have so far.

My only success is manually installing java, uninstalling it and leaving the folder that was created (I think the config.sys file remains). SCCM then successfully deploys.

As an extra note, I have noticed that if I manually install 8U25, then uninstall it and reinstall 7U67 to test the deployment package - it works fine.

If 8U25 has never been installed on the machine, however, it fails.

Digging through the log file now, thankful I don't have any hair left to pull out.

What is the path to this file? (I mean, I'll look for it on my successful machine...but if you wanna save me some time...*grin*)

ahaney I also use sccm2012 I had no problems with Java 7 update 67 . When I extracted the msi and ran itmanually on any PC i get "There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor. It wont even deploy through SCCM 2012. I did notice there is also no Data1 cab file either. I am at complete loss now. I can see other users with the same issue - If would appreciate if anyone has a solution or is this a fault with Java 8 uodate 25

Looks like they have not made the msi installer UAC compliant - if you turn it off you can run the msi installer

Uac doesn't matter with sccm. It uses the local system account. Make sure you have right clicked on the MSI brought up properties and click unblock.

Workaround so far

Do an install of Java and copy the java.settings.cfg file from "C:\ProgramData\Oracle\Java"

Deploy that file first to the machines that require java

Deploy Java to those machines

Here is what I have so far.

You have to create a package with the .exe not the .msi

set the source folder, (folder with the .exe lies)

Select Standard program then

That's the only way I have found that works. This will not supersede the old java and must be uninstalled with another application...

The java.settings.cfg can be specified when deploying the MSI...

Has anyone tried adding the INSTALL_SILENT property to the MSI install command?

Oracle's documentation mentions that the default value is "Disable" which would surely imply that it isn't installing silently.

Yes, the problem that some of us seem to be having is that it CAN be manually installed, but cannot be deployed through System Center.

[EDIT]

It can be deployed MANUALLY using the exact same command that System Center is using, which includes the "INSTALL_SILENT=1" option.

I just tested this on a machine that did not have Java 8 previously installed, and it worked as expected.

Literally, the ONLY change I had to make was to create that folder and copy the java.settings.cfg file into it.

I'll test it on a few more machines just to make sure - so far, you're 1 for 1 though!

My code is simply:

IIRC, I had to drop the /qb and replace it with just /q

Hi All,

Trying to deploy this on RM CC4 with Smoothwall.

1. Java sites work fine under local admin account.

2. Java does not work under logged in AD account.

It points to a proxy issue. On the smoothwall, I can see an AD user trying to get to a website but realtime smoothwall shows the IP of the PC and not the user with error 407 - client authentication error. So basically Java is trying to get out directly to the net.

I've configured the settings files for proxy, but even then it's the same story.

Anyone else had the same problem?

No - no quotes. I dont think you need them unless there is a space in the MSI filename

@Gatt, @sonofsanta. Have you had any problems deploying the latest JRE?

Aye - 7u67 would uninstall, then 8 wouldn't install automatically. It worked if I ran the command manually from a command prompt. Hell, it worked if I visited a machine and manually clicked retry in Software Center. But it wouldn't work automatically.

So I've copped out and pushed 7u72 out for now, and I'll revisit 8 next time out. It may well be the /qb as mentioned, or the NOSTARTMENU flag (that I didn't really need anyway, redirected Start Menu), or the new INSTALL_SILENT - I'll let you lot work it out for me
