Music Creation Software

Hi all,

 

I have been asked to look for some music creation software for Creative Arts, preferably free or not too expensive. This is to allow the students to create music using samples within the software for their BTEC, any ideas?

LMMS is open source and free. There's a new version released recently. It's actually very good and has built-in synths and a rather nice sampler. The installation also comes with a usable range of samples.

 

Despite its name, it's cross-platform.

Its strength is in looping, samples and beat creation. It does not record live audio, so if you have real instruments to record, you'll need something else.

 

It's well worth watching a few tutorials on Youtube, as some of the shortcuts and features may not be obvious - e.g. dragging a sample or a synth sound to the beat creation section or the timeline.

Mulab is excellent as an open source tool also. Also for scoring, Muse.

Sony Acid Xpress is free and very simple to use. Comes with loads of samples and you can use your own

 

Sony Acid (full) is better and isn't too pricey.

I gather LMMS doesn't follow NTFS permissions and GPO settings - anyone know about this either way?
