Something is 'breaking' a website, java? Flash? How can I tell what the problem is?

The Computing teacher wants the students to use this website to see how the internet works.

 

Visual Trace Route Tool - Find, Track, and Map the Route to an IP Address

 

When I try it on my mac, it works great, but when we try it on a students account the website doesn't load correctly.

 

I've upgraded Java and tried reducing the security to medium but it isn't helping.

 

As I'm not sure what it causing the problem, I don't know what to do to fix it.

Just to add to this, the source indicates it's javascript, but as far as I can tell I have javascript enabled to run on anywebsite.

If I try any of the 'test' websites, such as JavaScript Tester at Java Tester Website they all confirm it's ok.

Also, the site uses files from http://maps.gstatic.com - is this accessible?

That link , maps.gstatic.com doesn't work, but it's not blocked, it just says it's an invalid url

Hmm... That's what I get in IE. The site still works though in that browser.

 

Not sure at all what could be causing this then. My suggestion, load up the inspection tool by pressing F12, go to Console and see if there are any errors.

I've tried that in both IE and Chrome, and they both have error messages. But to me, they look like coding errors so I don't understand how the website sometimes works.

I suggest checking the developer tools' network tab while the page loads on the working and non working accounts, and see if there's something that's being blocked on the student accounts.

Thanks for all your help, I haven't quite got to the bottom of it, but it is something being blocked as if I connect without going through our proxy server then it is working fine.

Is it one particular browser that's doing this? Reason I ask is because once upon a time we had a website problem like you describe. We were using IE everywhere. The website in question was downloading a control from either Facebook or Twitter and getting blocked by the proxy. IE was then going 'lol no' and refused to render the rest of the page. Chrome and Firefox both rendered the page quite happily without the blocked control. It may be worth sticking Chrome on a machine and seeing if that behaves any better.

 

We found this out by using the IE dev tools and running a network trace.

Thats a CSS issue. The LI styles have not applied.

I can get to that page.

 

We tried both IE and Chrome and neither worked, but it must be something getting blocked as the staff have use a different proxy and they can access the page.

 

I didn't manage to really resolve it before the class, so the teacher has had to demonstrate instead.

Charles will tell you exactly what is getting blocked. Just remember to set the upstream proxy to the student proxy with login credentials. [Edit: Didn't read the date, I'm sure you're sorted by now, but still a very handy program for future reference]
